dangerous brain
I'm in a bit of a quandry now. My job is very well paid now and the overtime is flowing in nicely. I have a wedge to pay off from moving back here and being out of work but nowt I can't deal with in a year if I pull my horns in. Sooo anyways cars. My current situation is an aristo on the drive doing nothing, a range rover 4.6 HSE with a half fitted lpg system and some usual rangey expensive problems to sort, and a reliable but old volvo estate. I have spent bloody thousands on the rangey and it has a place in my heart. Its also the most competent towing vehicle I have ever owned (considering I own a heavy caravan thats a major boon). I have a love/hate relationship with my aristo. When it works its an awesome beast. When it doesn't its a £13 grand paperweight that needs more money spent on it. The volvo is dare I say it the best wagon I have. It cost me just over a grand and does everything a decent car should. The heated seats work, the leccy mirrors work, in fact all the electric stuff works. Its got turbo power shifts a bit and does actually have a lot of room for power improvements. Its MPG isn't all that bad either. Its also got 7 seats which the other half is insistent we need. I really could do with thinning down to two cars as I just don't want 3. I don't really want to sell any of the three I have but to run all three involves one too many sets of insurance tax and MOT for my budget or liking. So what do I do???? Options as I see them Sell the rangey and the volvo and buy A nother newer 7 seat heavy weight motor that can tow a decent sized caravan and use my aristo as a daily runner. Downside of this deal is I write off the thousands I spent on the rangey, and I sell the first car I've ever had that hasn't given me any grief at all. I also have to have my aristo back on the road as my daily runner which potentially could hit me for a couple of grand. Option 2 leave the status quo and never drive my aristo for the near or distant future. Option 3 sell the aristo and the rangey and buy a tdv6 series 3 discovery which both myself and the mrs want but would mean a massive loan to make up the difference. Scott
Just sell the rangey and fit a towing bar on the volvo. If it still works just run it till it breaks. Thats what i would do anyway. Scott =op
dangerous brain
Good plan but I still need 2 running cars. The volvo may struggle to pull my caravan halfway across europe.
Scott
Is the aristo broken? Scott =op
SupraAyf
The Aristo scores very few points IMO compared to the others in terms of practicality. The Range and the Volvo seem the sensible option.
dangerous brain
Is the aristo broken? Scott =op Um you could put it that way. Its had leccy issues that have resulted in a non existent map/ f*cked up map on my AEM computer. So it doesn't run much more than idle. Scott
Hmm, i would probably be fed up if it keeps breaking. Wouldn't you miss having a performance car though? Scott =op
Bryan_Jones
Wow, that's a tough call, but I'd have to say get rid of the aristo. The other 2 you actually need more than want. If the aristo is not very reliable then your looking for trouble.
Bryan_Jones
Or get something that has the space of the Volvo and the style of the aristo. Then sell the aristo and the Volvo.
dangerous brain
Hmm all well and good but after having some 500 odd horsepower machine there is no going back again. The aristo in itself is a compromise because I sold what I considered was my ideal ever car (tt bpu and some aerotop). I am finding it very hard to move away from this high powered fraternity and a slow car just doesn't cut the mustard. That said a beast from the east that gets no further than the end of my drive is not the answer either. I guess my other option is flog the aristo as it stands and buy a cheap assed tt 6 speed supra and sell the volvo to pay the insurance lol/
RobSheffield
Sell Aristo, Sell problematic Rangey and BUY LPG equipped or Diesel Land Rover Discovery (NOT TDV6 if you need to get a loan for it!) or Range Rover, problem solved, please call again
dangerous brain
OK so who wants a dodgy range rover and a do luck special aristo?

Pixelfill
OK so who wants a dodgy range rover and a do luck special aristo? I'll give you a very grand £13 for your paperweight Mike
JamieP
Dont get a massive loan for a car, not worth it imo, sounds like you have had enough of the aristo, if it was me id sell the aristo and get a cheap tt to keep you amused and with the money left upgrade the rangey to maybe a newer landcruiser? Timwildman
Hi Brian hows it going? I'd second JamieP on the loan don't do it! Car loans just are not worth it. You'll never get it back. As for the Aristo do you relly miss it when it's off the road? As it sounds like it's not been running great for quite a while, you'll probably not miss it. Cheap cars are great a £1k volvo doesn't owe anything, most common cars loose £2k a year anyway. I'd say go for a nice jap 4x4 keep trusty old volvo. Sell Aristo and Range Rover. Still where I am I'd never get a nice fast motor, too many t***ers on the road. Maybe when I move back to sunny home!
Max Headroom
As an owner of a performance Volvo, I would strangely say buy a Volvo and get it chipped to up the bhp and torque. Towing has been discussed on the volvo forum and this seems to work.
dangerous brain
EEK pretty much all the advice is sell the aristo and range rover which could prove to be a proper pain If I was asking the same question and it was a single turbo supra not an aristo would the response still be the same?? I am indeed fed up of the aristo situation ie a car that has a lot of money invested in it but never gets used because of what it is. Its a bit too scarily fast for winter use and I hate getting it dirty (sad I know) so in reality its not a daily driver. I'm fed up of throwing money down the range rovers drain. £50 of fuel in a weeks commute thats only 10 minutes long is taking the mick a bit. Then we have trusty old volvo. Does everything it should and more. Its only fault is it doesn't look nice and has utterly no status at all. I had thought of upgrading to a V70R AWD and maybe tweaking that a bit. My main plan would be sell on the rangey and the volvo and buy with the proceeds a 02 disco or a w ish reg v70r. The TDV6 disco3 is just a pipedream as I am too tight to pay the interest on the loan for it lol. Something like this one would be just the ticket I think. http://pistonheads.com/sales/390131.htm
dangerous brain
Hmm I think I will sell the rangey and volvo and get an LPG'd disco around 2001 plate. Now for the ball ache of selling up 2 cars.
Bryan_Jones
Well at least it has helped you come to conclusion quickly. You obviously want to keep the aristo. So be it. Hope it goes well with selling them.
