PC graphics card

I recently acquired a load of 20 HP P4s (all legally  , uncle acquired a business which went into receivership). The seem very basic, no network, sound or graphics cards!

Ive installed a sound card, network card, dvd drive on one of the machines and when i installed PowerDVD (the software I use on my other pc’s to play DVDs) i get sound but no picture or rather a blue screen with the following message:

PowerDVD does not support the current display mode

DDraw overlay mode is the recommended mode, to restore it, please:

1.Close other video applications that are using DDraw resources, or

2.Lower the screen resolution, color depth, and/or refresh rate, or

3. Update to the latest Microsoft DirectX Runtime and to the latest display driver.

Does this mean that the onboard graphics chip does not work or support DVD playback and that I need a graphics card??

Well the onboard GFX should be able to do it (although not very good) you should update the graphics drivers for the motherboard in question. Go to the manufacturers website and get the latest GFX chipset drivers for that motherboard. Also you should really get the latest DirectX (DX 9c).

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm

then give it a shot, if it gives the same message then you will need to get a GFX (nothing fancy)

Here is a quote from the PowerDVD website FAQ

Q: Error Code: "F6F00018" pops out during playback. What does it mean? How to resolve it?

A :

This problem is caused because your VGA card can not enable the overlay function. We suggest that you do the following:

(a) Close all other applications that would use overlay (Like Windows MediaPlayer, Netmeeting, or other DVD players). Since Most display cards support only one overlay, If it is used by other applications, PowerDVD will not be able to access it.

(b) Install the latest DirectX. If you did not know where to download DirectX, then you can visit the Microsoft Web site to download. (http://www.microsoft.com/directx). Some display drivers require the latest DirectX to work.

© Please lower your screen resolution, color depth, and refresh rate. If this still does not work, we suggest that you try to upgrade your VGA card.

(d) Visit your VGA manufactory website to update driver.

Hope it helps.

My advice is to update DX9, then update the GFX drivers so you have a healthy system to begin with... The codecs are a good idea but they will not help if your drivers are not up to spec. You are prob only running on the windows native graphics driver and performance will be el-crapola. It is just there to get you by until you install the proper GFX drivers for your system. DX9 is a major component that also needs installing so your graphics work properly.
