Jake
SteveR came and took my car away today It felt very weird seeing him drive off in my car. I hope he got home OK. I did have a laugh at him stalling it on my driveway though. Those clutches take some getting used to. I'm really struggling to know what car to get next. I've been out in a couple of M3s and they were OK if a bit boring compared to a single Supe. I was quite disappointed TBH, they don't seem any quicker than a stock (non-BPU) TT really. I think I will just get a cheapo M3 for a while and see how I get on. I can always upgrade later if they grow on me. Any thoughts on these ones? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/305577.htm http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/288489.htm http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/347210.htm If you were picking one of the above, which would you choose and why? Please spare me the anti-BMW remarks though - I feel bad enough already!
Rayman
What about a csl?
Jake
I dunno if they're worth the premium. They're like £10k more than the equivalent M3, which seems a lot for a CF roof and no AirCon or stereo. I think I'll invest in some CSL wheels for my m3 though - I really like those wheels. marc_p
I would say the last one as it the best value one there in a popular colour(easier resale) I have also heard a few nasty rumours about the SMG gearboxes, but you don't truly know until you see them in the flesh as the camera CAN lie and there could be a reason why this guy has had to reduced the price, but definetly worth a look. jevansio
They are stunning cars Jake, I believe the CSLs are all semi automatic, or am I wrong? If so I believe the M3 CS's come with manual boxes (if thats your thing). One followed me home tonight, very aggressive looking cars. supra matt
got to be the first one OR what about R34?

True they are a premium, im thinking they dont depreciate that quickly and they are a world away from the standard M3 performance wise or so ive read. Looks wise they are pretty similar and i suppose if i was spending that much id stump up the further 15 or so grand for the new M3.

bignum
Ooh, i`ll give steve a bell later, bet your sad to see it go, gone to a good home though. On the m3 front the blue 1 seems best and as someones already said steer clear from smg, very problematic. Jake
heard a few nasty rumours about the SMG gearboxesInteresting. What kind of rumours? They are stunning cars Jake, I believe the CSLs are all semi automatic, or am I wrong? I think you might be right, certainly all the ones I've seen are SMG. Doesn't bother me either way really, I quite like autos and fancy trying a SMG for a while.
jaymdee
Probably first one for looks, although the blue one is nice, and I've always liked Estoril Blue M3s, but somehow looks too boring compared to the black one. It is newer, cheaper and lower mileage though
Jake
blue one somehow looks too boring compared to the black one. I know what you mean. I think it's the CSL wheels on the black one that make it look better than the blue. With a set of CSLs I bet the blue would look great. marc_p
Interesting. What kind of rumours? http://www.adrenalintrip.net/bmw-m3s-smg-gearbox/forum/viewtopic/95/236918?siteid=1 Think most of the problems were fixed on the SMG II though. Muffleman
Interesting. What kind of rumours? I looked at an M3 couple of years ago, and the independant BMW specialist I saw said that the SMG gearboxes are very frail. It's certainly worth investigating before taking the plunge mate
paul mac
how long have you had the car Jake, i think i will need therapy when the day comes when mine goes
SteveR
SteveR came and took my car away today It felt very weird seeing him drive off in my car. I hope he got home OK. Home safe & sound! Cor that was a stressful journey - apart from one section of completely dry, clear DC I stayed off-boost all the way, lol. Even then I only put my foot down half way, in 6th gear, and only for 5 seconds! I did have a laugh at him stalling it on my driveway though. Those clutches take some getting used to. I stalled it at my house too - was all proud with myself for 'mastering' the clutch/lightened flywheel combo along the journey, pride before a fall eh. Thanks for selling Jake, I promise to look after it even more than my last one, if that's possible.
dangerous brain
Are you specifically after a sporty/coupe?
rob wild
Why not just use your BPU supra? Or is it you want a total change?
Jake
how long have you had the car Jake, i think i will need therapy when the day comes when mine goes I got it in May 06. Since I've been working at Visa I've been using it as my daily driver but 100 miles a day at 15mpg gets a bit tedious. I've just agreed to go Perm too so that's about a 15k paycut. Thanks for selling Jake, I promise to look after it even more than my last one, if that's possible. I'd love it if you get the car up to what it could be. It's probably the newest 6sp turbo in the club, maybe the whole UK, so it's got potential to something really special. As we discussed, changing the flywheel and clutch would make it so much more civilised to drive. Are you specifically after a sporty/coupe? Not necessarily, I'm open to suggestions. Why not just use your BPU supra? Or is it you want a total change? It's a good point Rob. I've been driving Supras for 5 years now though - I guess I'm just a bit bored of them at the moment. DannyB
Ill echo the suggestion to a 5 series, M5 all the way mate Quicker then a M3 and sounds awesome, and not as many around compared to the 3.
Jake
Aren't they mega-thirsty as well though? Like 12-15mpg? The M3 owners I've asked reckon they 20-25mpg depending on how hard its driven.
DannyB
Yes all 5's arent too great on fuel tbh, but im sure if you drive with a bit of care youll get decent (for this size of the engine being a v8) returns. tbh tho 20mpg isnt too pretty and thats what you can expect, and alot less if you like the noise, which of course, you would! Mines only a 530 (straight 6) but the comfort and ride is really good as youd expect from BMW, i was looking into 330ci but imo 3 series are too common.
