My 3 year old bull mastiff has just been diagnosed with this, has anyone on heres pets ever been diagnosed with this or know of anyone with pets with it. The vets dont seem to hold much hope for her, just wondered if anyone had any info?

Any vets on here??

As you've been told kidney disease is unfortunately bad news in most circumstances. One of the problems is that by the time you see clinical signs over 75% of the kidney has been affected and it isn't an organ that can regenerate.

Classic "kidney failure" is usually seen in older dogs and comes on over time with the usual signs being weight loss, drinking more, peeing more etc. Unfortunately there is no cure as such, only treatments which can put less pressure on the kidneys (eg. specfic diets). In younger dogs you can get kidney disease due to a sudden kidney infection and in some ways this is the best case scenario as once the infection is gone the dog can recover, but it is quite rare.

There are also several other types including damage secondary to a heart condition (kidney isn't supplied by enough blood), immune based damage, growths, cysts etc.

It is rare to find in a 3 year old but the possibility of recovery will depend entirely on what's caused the problem in the first place. I hope this has a happy outcome.

We are VERY lucky to have Steve willing to share his hard earned knowledge to us, for free, I for one think it's very commendable of him and thank him sincerely.

I'll second that, helped me a couple of years back and nothing is too much trouble for the guy.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for Andy's dog :(

My son's dog has an underactive thyroid gland and is on lifetime medication. To add to his bad luck he was attacked by THREE pit bull type dogs today and I had to take him to the vet. No lasting damage luckily enough.

Dontcha think he looks like Gerry Adams. Scooby the dog, not my son!!

Well we have moved her to a Veterinary hospital where they are doing more tests, she will be having an ultrasonic scan today which will hopefully provide us with the cause of all this.

The one good thing is she seems to be eating and drinking and going to the toilet on her own etc, they have managed to stop her vomiting and they are now just trying to flush the system and find out why this has happened.

Thanks for the kind words guys and Stevie your advice is very much appreciated mate.

Fingers crossed guys:(

So sorry mate:(

reading this thread it seems you did all you could for her, remember those good years you had with her, not enough of them I know :(

When you feel up to it post a nice pic of her.

Take it easy,
