Transpose formula - Maths!!

Is transpose even the right word?

 

Can someone switch this formula round for me to get x as the main argument on one side.

 

 

-((x*y)-x) + (((a*b)-a)*0.95) = (x*0.95) - a

 

 

I got:

((((a*b)-a)*0.95)+a) / (1-(0.05/y)) = x

But it doesn't give the figure I was expecting.

It saddens me to think that I used to be a whizz at this kind of thing at school but now I wouldn't know where to start.

That was my kind of joke, where you deliberately get it wrong with a similar word. Unfortunately most people don't see the joke and correct you as if you are thick.....:(

This is over complicated so I simplified it by removing unnecessary brackets, you don't need to use the multiply sign either, eg xy = x*y.

 

Therefore: -(xy-x) +0.95(ab-a) = 0.95x - a

 

 

And the end result is:

 

 

x= a(0.95b+0.05)/(y-0.5)

I got the impression that Trev was actually working something out that to, hence the question. That would mean that he needs to work something out at least once "in life".

 

 

even what do all the a b x y stand for/mean? just letters

 

I think it's unlikely that the letters don't actually represent some other quantities, unless he's mathematically reworking the alphabet for pleasure and profit, however it's unnecessary for Trev to mention these quantities in order to rearrange the equation :).

Also thanks to:

I got

x = (a(.95b+.05)) / (y-.05)

I got:

x = (y(0.95((ab-b)+a)))/0.95

My one actually works, it was put into excel anyway so it doesn't really matter how confusing the equation is!! I'll probably use one of these ones if they work as well - because I'll probably be bored tomorrow and swapping equations in excel cells for equations which do exactly the same thing will pass a few minutes.

 

 

//edit: Merc, I oversimplified it because I always manage to confuse people who don't seem to understand the BODMAS principles, it's usually easier for most people if they can clearly see what order the equation needs to be done in!!!
