Jap 93 GZ Auto (2nd Gear Query)

Recommended Posts

I am from the UK and last month bought a low mileage Supra GZ Japanese Import

1993 (Automatic). The car is immaculate and engine bay is like new. Now

i am getting more used to the Supra i have noticed that when i select 2nd

gear and stay on high revs i can hear a rythmic tapping sound coming from the engine

which i dont hear when i am in drive. Could someone please advise if this

is normal or whether i should be worried.

Any help\advice is appreciated

Thanks

Hi Chris and welcome to the BBS. Another local.

Are you sure the sound is coming from the engine? A few of us have found a similar noise, was associated with a long over due ATF change.

A simple drain and refill of 2L of Type IV ATF fluid did the trick. I think one member found he had to do two changes to get the noise to go away. I think it had something to do with the solenoids in the auto box.

Check your auto fluid level first. There are threads on here about correct checking procedures.

This is a late reply however a valid one.

Today i visited VM Transmission Products to get my auto box serviced, flushed and an oil change. They came recommended by ADI. This issue has been discussed a few times before and recently in this thread Here

Basically the tapping noise has now gone and the Auto box feels much smoother. They charged £65 + vat and i supplied the Toyota Type IV ATF.

Thanks to ADI for recommending them and to Terminator for the original diagnosis (You were right all along), I wish i had done this sooner.

Thanks and Regards

P.S. I love this site, more than is healthy.
