Supragal
How long would it take to get fit enough to run a 5k? And based on what level of training? (ie every day or every second day etc, what distances to step it up in etc)
attilauk
it depends how fit you are now? if you went for a run every other day you should be able to do 5k in a few weeks
davidd
6-8 weeks up to 2 wks - 1/2 mile every other day 3-4 - 1 to 2 mile 4-6 - 3 mile up to 4 - getting used to the distance 4+ - improving/getting faster/building confidence to step up dist & speed that's my idea or look at this : http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=
Marco
Training 3 times a week should be plenty.
Supragal
Do you guys run yourselves? How bad is it to run on roads, I've heard it's terrible for joints etc
attilauk
I used to run a fair bit, 5 miles a day, but now i spend more time in the gym instead (its not nice running in the cold and wet over winter). if you have a good pair of running shoes then you should be fine
davidd
Do you guys run yourselves? How bad is it to run on roads, I've heard it's terrible for joints etc I compete in 5k/10k/half marathons. Training incl twice a week 7 or 8 miles, 1 x 11to14 miles run on sunday plus 25-30 mles bike ride on Sat - might change if training for a particular distance or different surfaces race Choice of shoes is vital - specialist running shops better than kids working in JJB/Dixon, etc other links beginner training http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=30 choosing shoes http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=
The Hornet
Running is good for your fitness but not good on your joints. I would recommend joining a Gym or using other fitness techniques. If people dont want to join a gym and have no real idea of how to get fit, improve on weight or tone up then I would suggest going to a Gym for an induction course then they should give you ideas which can be done from home. Just don't over do it, or you'll feel aweful and give up, start of small and work your way up as such. Wish I still had to the time to be into gym as I used to, I loved it. I have one side of my garage fully fitted out as a gym too. Damn I'm depressed now as I've let myself slide (going into a quiet room to cry) Hornet
Supragal
It's more that work are trying to get people to do a charity 5k run... I won't be joining a gym I hate them. Obviously summer would be the best time to train, and it's not til Sept but I'm not sure I wanna commit yet lol
davidd
It's I won't be joining a gym I hate them. lol 'ere 'ere - my gym is the roads/fields/hills around yorkshire - cheaper & some nice views. get outdoors for some fresh air (even in winter)
Faye
I occassionally run (if you can call it that) and although I'm prone to aching knees and joints I don't find it too bad at all. Before I started though I did go to a sports shop that actually monitors where the pressure points on your feet are so that they can advise you on the best running shoe for your feet. The service was free the shoes were £70.

Guest Usmann A
Running is good. But just buy yourself a skipping rope and skip for atleast 15minutes everyday(as a beginer) Although be warned, if you skip on hard/concrete floor your will suffer from acheing Shins, known as Shin splitting.(you will get use to this) Its actually very good for co-ordination, and fitness at the same time. it will give you the endurance in your legs for long runs. Soop Dogg
This may sound an obvious thing to say, but the more weight you're carrying, the more damage you might do to your joints. I want to do some running, but I think I'll be out on the bike first for a month or two to get my weight down before I go back to running. (All down to Christmas of course.....cough!) Whitelightning
I think most people can run 5k without training. Its the condition that you would be in at the end that would be different. I personally prefer running with weight - but I think thats a vocational thing
Supragal
I used to skip a lot for boxing training. It's just a bit mind numbing after a while... tis good though. The other thing of course is running alone especially at night. Maybe I won't volunteer
Faye
interesting... where was that do you remember? Do they have to see your feet? I hate feet. It was somewhere just off Covent Garden. Could be a bit of a problem, you do have to get your feet out and you have to run onto a sensor pad. All in all you feel a bit of a prat. But I don't have aching joints or painful feet so it was worth it
