'Speaking Indian' - is this term PC?

Serious question - so no off topic comments please

Some input please guys

Had a 'discussion' with one of the teachers at the college regarding the use of the term

'They were speaking Indian'

(Basically in the context of international student group interaction - who are all from India - very places)

I was told that I must use the term Hindi or Punjabi speaking...

Is this correct - as I need it for a piece of work I am doing - or is 'Indian speaking' acceptable

Cheers

Paul

On a serious note how are you gonna know if theyre speaking in hindi, punjabi or urdu? if i spoke to you in urdu then youd think its the same as hindi. So yes indian is fine mate

My point too...

I am not sure of the finer points of the language divide...as a separate language is this a cultural difference or merely one of geogaphy?

For instance if a Welshman spoke Welsh he would be insulted to be described as English etc

I don't see why 'Indian' can't be seen as a general term to cover all the languages spoken by those from India.

Maybe you had best say 'They were speaking an Indian language' rather than just 'speaking Indian'

:yeahthat: Its an Indian Language.

I think 'indian' covers all i.e. punjabi, urdu or hindi. But the confusion comes when you consider Punjab is both in India and Pakistan dna on top of this Urdu and Hindi are also spoken widely in both countries.

So to sum this up - I would say as long as your peers are all born/come from India (not Pakistan) then they can be described as speaking 'Indian' but if some of them are from Pakistan then you cannot refer to them as speaking 'Indian' as of course Pakistan is a diff country! :D

LOL, and is it any wonder that standards have dropped when they waste time with all this? :D

...well theres nothing wrong about being correct.

Tell me if you went to America and they were adament that you spoke 'American' being a proud Brit would you not think they were a little ignorent? I know I would.

Same as when people see an oriental asian and automatically describe them as 'Chinese' even though they could well be Jap, Thai, Sumo etc etc

Dont get me wrong - I think its the norm nowadays and most have just come to live with it and its pretty non-offensive - so im not too bothered

Most English speaking Welsh make it sound like an Indian langauge!

I shall desribe them as speaking an Indian language..thanks for the input

I'm afraid I have already fallen foul of the PC brigade :(

One of the sessions on diversity asked for my reaction if (a purported true event) three gays come up to me and ask if they can set up a 'gay club' in the year...

...after I had stopped laughing and wiped the tears from my eyes I responded that as long as they didn't require me to join - they could go and bugger each other stupid in the privacy of their own homes -

- and in the meantime could they please describe Kurt Lewin's Force field model...

It didn't go down to well :( :)
