Sorry to hear this mate:( Think of him and listen to the advice of the vet.

If you have to make that decision then it's the best thing you can do to repay all the good times he has given you, it's the best and last thing you can do for him:( .

When making the decision be sure it's 100% in the interest of the dog, VERY difficult to let them go I know, just be sure that you do the right thing by him mate.

Good luck and hope the vet can give him a while longer;)

Jazz if the vet says to put him down then do as the vet says,i'm sorry this sounds real harsh but if you love him you will do this,he will respect you and you will stop any suffering he is going through.I know its not an easy thing to do, but in your heart of hearts you know it is right. You dont want to see him suffer by not having a full quality of life.I feel for you, i know it's not an easy thing to do.

Feck mate, fingers crossed for you. My GSD bitch is one of the most important parts of my life, she's a proper daddy's girl.

They are not the healthiest bread of dog, prone to many problems unfortunatly. On a more promising note my grans dog had similar symptons a few weeks ago and she's right as rain now.

Thoughts are with you.

12 years is a damned good age for a GSD, especially one with joint issues, if he can't walk he should be put to sleep, period, forget how you feel, think of the dog, and a dog that doesn't have proper mobility, is 12 years old, and a big breed, isn't going to be happy forced to drag itself around. Do the honourable thing by the dog, and if the vet suggests he euthanase it, do it for your dog's sake. I hope it doesn't come to that, but there are too many people unable to make a difficult decision and who then watch some poor critter struggle through it's last months in purgatory.

I agree with what has been said with the vet knowing best, my girlfriend is a veterinary nurse, she says the he could go on glucassamine such as Seraquin which will ease the joints and they could put him on metacam which is an anti inflammatory pain killer. This of course depends on the severity...

She also says that at her practice a German Shepard patient has a back leg wheel chair and he got used to it just fine, and is very happy.

I hope all is well mate...!

Haven't got much luck at the moment are you.

The others are right though. I had to make that kind of decision 18 months ago with my cat and it was the hardest thing I ever had to do but it was the right thing for my boy (He was 14).

Don't be selfish Hun do whats best for your beloved pet. Good luck though.

We have a German Shepherd cross who is 12 years old, his back legs are weakening and we've been really worried at his lack of mobility recently even after short walks, but he perked up when we started giving him a glucosamine suphate and calcium supplement.

Hope your dog is ok, my previous german shepherd/collie cross lived until he was 17!

well vet just came around i didnt bother with my normal vets as hes just interested in money, well this vet told me not to give him metacam and said hes not as bad as i made out lol although hes in alot of pain. He gave him 2 injections and 20 tablets 4 a day for now. He asked me to call him tommorow to let him know how he is and he might need a heart injection, well at least hes keeping him alive:).
