tbourner
Can anyone tell me what people actually use knives for when going hunting? Because I've just got an air rifle I won't actually be hunting for a while, but started thinking about knives today, seen some people with LOTS of knives, but never asked what they actually do with them!! Also, what type is best? Flat blade? Curved blade? Serated top? Lock knife? Sheath knife? etc. etc.

Harllequin
I have a 3" lock knife and one of those multi tool things. Key is to make sure its good and strong. Keep it very sharp and your onto a winner. Depends on what your doing and how long your going out for to be honest. If your going to be a while out you may consider food while out. If you have ya dog with you then it will want fed also. Shoot, skin, then roast your game over a fire. Nice little snack for you an the hound. Skin and joint your game, peal a few veg and do them all in an earth oven. Pop a pigeon then use the knife n multi tool to turn it into a lure. knife use only limited by imagination
garethr
To gralloch the deer carcass so that it's easier to carry...... no, wait, that's Scotland. To kill the boar while the dogs hold it...... no, wait, that's Australia. To carve blocks of snow for an emergency igloo...... no, wait, that's Canada. I give up
dane_stone
Have you not seen Rambo? You need one like his with a compass on a needle and thread so you can stitch up wounds and very sharp so you can show off cutting through paper without it bending. I think he cut through a wire fence too with it.

dangerous brain
Survival knives for proper soldiers I can understand as they are very useful. That said so is just a straight machete combined with a decent sharp multi knife. If I was to take a knife hunting I would take the gerber magnum lst with me http://militarykit.com/products/gerber/knife_magnum_lst_junior.htm Some hodding great sword is just a joke and will just annoy you on the move. You need a high quality steel or it will either just snap or be too bendy. You also need something thats put together well and won't loosen up and unlock (that will chop a big lump out of the back of your fingers if it does that). For hunting and practical use I'd have the one with the serrated lower end. For stabbing someone downtown (or getting yourself stabbed by producing a knife when drunk) take the straight one. SupraAyf
Trev, I wouldn't bother carrying a knife unless you intend to eat the animal on a camping expedition and TBH, I wouldn't really bother with that as there's loads of chip-shops these days:innocent:
