Mike M Posted March 6, 2008 Share Posted March 6, 2008 Been getting crap mileage since going BPU and I've tried a long run and being nice to it and noticed no difference. I reckon I've lost at least 60miles out the tank range. Anyway on idle I noticed that when I disconnect the vac ref hose to the BOV the revs pick up which I'm assuming is sucking in air making things slightly leaner. BUT does this mean its idling rich to start with? O2 sensor? The car has become very jerky when cold especially lifting off the throttle and does the slight misfire on idle thing all the time bump bump babump with the odd big one you can feel. New NGK sparks gapped to 0.9mm If I remember right for 1.0bar. I did have IK22's but my idle sounded and felt crap. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Homer Posted March 6, 2008 Share Posted March 6, 2008 If it's not misfiring when on full boost it points to an issue with the idle control IMO. However a first very simple check to make is to remove the coil pack connectors and check they are not brittle or have any missing insulators. Second check would be to do as Daston says and give the O2 sensor an overnight clean in lemon juice (be sure to clean it off before reinstalling), if it idles well afterwards it's time to order a new O2 sensor. After years of use (or misuse!) the O2 sensor can get clogged with carbon deposits, removing it and soaking the sensor in lemon juice (a mild acid) gently removes the deposits and can temporarily make them report correct readings to the ECU. In most cases this will show an improvement if the sensor is the cause of the problems. Mike M Posted March 7, 2008 Author Share Posted March 7, 2008 Cheers guys, I dont suspect the ignition really new clips and coil packs fitted just over a year ago and the clips were good two months ago when I fitted the NGKs. However I do think its the original 93 O2 sensor in there since i'm the first uk owner. Might have been done in Japan but I cant read my service book and it was low mileage when it arrived. 60k miles. Anyone tried using lime juice? Trust me to have the other bottle LOL. The only change I noticed was after ditching the fairly new IK22's to NGK's and it idled sweet as a nut then a few days later returned to its lumpy self. If it is the original O2 sensor then it will definitely need changing and should make a noticeable difference to mpg's and smoothness of the engine at lower rpms.
