neo1
Hi all, Please could someone help me out, my TT heaters are blowing stone cold….. the electronics and flaps are all A-OK, I have made sure the rad is topped up (as I was told the Mk IV is a self bleeding cooling system. Is there a heater matrix bleed valve or a highest point air bleed as I cant find one anywhere and I’m sure it’s a simple case of an air lock in the heater matrix that needs bleeding off. Please, please, please help….. I’m FROZEN
ardasaliah
The easiest way I've found of bleeding the coolant system is to let the expansion tank do the hard work. You have to fill the expansion tank about 3/4 full of coolant, and when the system warms up air gets vented into the expansion tank as it's pushed out the rad and it bubbles off, and when the system cools down it sucks coolant back into the system from the expansion tank. With an 'overfull' tank it always has fluid to suck back in. About 2 or 3 cycles like this and your airlocks will be gone, but remember to have the heater on full heat so that the heater matrix is actually in the loop, and you may get some coolant sprayed out of the expansion tank, which is normal for this procedure and nothing to worry about. Chris Wilson
See if hot water is flowing round the heater matrix first by feelig BOTh pipes in AND out of the matrix, under the bonnet. If the matrix is flowing hot water its a flap control problem. if it isn't the matrix is either air locked (unlikely) or bunged up. If you feel brave you can gently blow it through with an air line. The usual reason for blockages is using Radweld type gunk to stop a leak...
Gordon F
Worth checking to see that the heater matrix hasn't been bypassed by a previous owner as they are a bastard to change

absz
are you sure you have the correct coolant mixture 50/50 (antifreeze) if not then the heater will not warm up in cold weather.

Pardon? Unless the water freezes the heater will work with plain water, or even neat antifreeze....

LeeT
i get this too. it will work eventually but soon goes cold again. ive tried bleeding for airlocks and ive run water through the matrix with a hose pipe so definitely no blockages. my problem may well be a control fault. what would i need to look at inside the car? absz
Pardon? Unless the water freezes the heater will work with plain water, or even neat antifreeze.... heaters warm up much quicker with correct mix of coolant. as antifreeze heats up much quicker than water, having pure water in system on cold days delays that process and depending on length of journeys (short)will not give time to heat up systems enough to open heater valves on climate control. womble
My matrix is being done as we speak!!!! Could you post up on here how much they charged you when it's done as mine went ages ago and I'd like to get a rough idea of what I should be paying. neo1
Do our cars have two seperate thermostats one for the water jacket and another for the heater supply ? I bled the system from the top last night and it seems to have worked, i let it cool overnight and fired it up again this morning and the heaters still seem to be working.... They are not boiling hot though. Right, at the weekend im going to flush the matrix with flushing agent as i know the flap gear is working fine, then blow it out with an air line. Will let you know how it goes :s
