Fargo
LOoking to get 2 desktops sorted, one for the missus to run Sims, Civ etc and one for me to surf, Mp3's, download and play (simultaneous) videos (to TV) and a few video conversions. Whats the opinions on Intel Pentioum duelcore and core 2 processor. and also on the AMD sempron, athlon 64 and ahlton 64x2 dual core. Scott
Core2duo is the one you want for the workhorse. Athlon64 will be fine for the Mrs comp. Scott =op
robin
For video encoding i would only want to use a 64x2 or a core 2 duo. In terms of raw performance intel has the lead at the moment but the 64x2 still offers good competitive value and it's always good to support the under dogs. I'm on the other side of the fence Used to be a big AMD fan, but after being recommended an intel for my HTPC and putting an E6750 in, I'm definitely an intel fan
Pete
Might as well go Quad Core for the price now. Just upgraded by Core2 Duo 2.13 to a Quad Core 2.40 for £35 + vat. Performance increase has been noticeable (and it's so cool to see four processors listed) It's a Q6600 so smaller die or something, 8Mb cache. Think I'll test just how clockable it is in a minute. Daston
Go for the Intel as it will have more upgrade options. I used to be a big AMD guy had the FX-52 top of the line dual core. Then went to the QX6850 and its in a differnt leage!

Mine is running at 3.0Ghz quite happily. I'm sure it'll go further, but no need to for now. Stock cooling, so it's really quiet Fargo: I don't know if the video encoding stuff you are thinking of using (virtualdub or a front-end for it?) makes good use of the multiple processors, but I use Handbrake (http://www.handbrake.fr - apparently there is a Windows version), and it happily uses all four processors and compresses a DVD to whatever in next to no time. I've got a big typhoon sat on it which is more than adequate.
JustGav
Hmmm, I must be one of the only people running it at stock speeds
Jake
On a related subject; my new PC, just a cheapy one from Novatech, has a "Athlon XP 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.41GHz" and 2GB of RAM. Now, I'm just running regular XP Pro SP2, but I'm wondering if I would get better performance from a 64bit OS - or wouldn't it make any real world difference? There is a 64bit version of XP, right? Or would I need to have Vista? (Which one?) (I used to keep up with all this stuff but lost interest when I discovered Supras)
Daston
You wont see much difference at all mate. XP you will have a hard time finding drivers and Vista will run slow anyway.
Jake
Cool. Thanks mate.
Pete
Hmmm, I must be one of the only people running it at stock speeds I ran my Duo 2.13 at 3.0 for about 12 months without skipping a beat. With the Typhoon fan of course.

Pete
Super is "a GUI for ffmpeg, MEncoder, mplayer, x264, mppen" - so it's basically the same as Handbrake then.
Jake
and errr your point Well, are the Intel CPUs in that review the dual/quad core ones that are available nowadays? (I'm not an Intel fanboy BTW, I have a Athlon XP 4600 - mind you I'm not a fanboy of those either - damn you're right; I don't have a point after all!) I used Super a couple of times but as I'm on that GNU operating system now I had to find something different.
ShamelessTT
Ive got a Quad core, very pleased with it. Intel all the way for me! (Have never owned an AMD)
Thorin
I'd choose Intel Quad Core every time now MeGUI is the best front end for video encoding on Windows IMO http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/Main_Page
