you are 25 and you can't get insurance !

Joke isn't it.. Plus most of the insurers didn't even ask me about where I live or my occupation!! Just heard about the car, no claims and that was it!

Ok well I've changed to my mums postcode and my quote dropped 4k!!! What is that bout!!!! Turns out my area is BLACKLISTED. 2100 is a lot more affordable so maybe I'm onto something here at last! :D

If you want to get an idea how your postcode is viewed by insurance (and other) companies take a look at http://www.upmystreet.com

I took a look at your one and it's pretty bad TBH, which is probably why you're getting such bad quotes.

The strange thing is, mine is rated slightly worse, but my insurance is only about 50% higher than most here. (13yrs driving, 13yrs no claims though & no points which probably helps!)

I'm 25 with no convictions, no accidents, no previous points and been driving for 8 years. I had been on parents insurance till 21 and then managed to get 2 years no claims against my name. It turns out that because I didn't continue my own insurance as I have been on my company policy (which has included me driving a Mercedes E320 which is quite quick) it has been 2 years since my no claims ended so I have lost it all and have to start from 0yrs!!
I'm not following your logic. You want No Claims Bonus for insurance somebody else paid for?

Furthermore, I still have a GSXR 600 motorbike (0-60 in 3.8 secs) and have 4 years no claims (this year being my fifth - I paid £260 TPFT this year). I mean no disrespect but those of you who have ridden motorbike's know that you can get into trouble quicker than in cars and I personally believe more skill/better awareness of the road is required. No matter - motorbike insurance counts for nothing!
I agree with you here. It takes some some skill/caution/(self)control to not crash a decent sized bike; more than driving some old jap car requires, so why doesn't it garner you any credit with an insurance company?

I am due to undertake my professional exams next month which marks 3 years hard work and joining a professional body which can barr you for having a motoring conviction!
Really? Just for a motoring conviction?

What are you going for, Archbishop of Canterbury? What else would bar you for the odd speeding ticket?

I was trying to get a quote for a big single supra and you can guess what has happened next. Nothing against Sky Insurance but they outright refused to insure me
I know the age thing seems unfair but it does make some sense really. Most guys who have made it into their 30s without getting banned/killing themself/killing somebody else/writing off cars/etc are a much better bet, insurance wise, than a twenty something who's been driving a company car for the past couple of years and now wants a big-single Supra.

Not meant as a put-down, just explaining the 'old fart with a big single' point of view.

The point about my no claims bonus and company insurance is that with company insurance I have not needed to have a personal car or personal insurance. I'm not saying that I should get additional no claims bonus years (although it would be nice) but because of this fact I have lost my own no claims bonus as I have not insured personally in two years.

The other point is that insurance companies seem to view this as I have not been driving for 2 years which, of course, isn't true..

As part of the company scheme I have driven a 3.2 litre diesel which shows I've driven a similar size vehicle (not bhp perhaps) but the insurers I spoke to will not recognise this fact...

Agreed, whether they will insure you should depend on whether you've made a claim in the last x number of years (which they also ask you), not how many years "no-claims" you've had. That should purely reduce the quote by x percentage each year. Doesn't work like that for some reason though.

Anyone ever tried getting a quote off one of the companies that advertise 75% reduction for 5 years no claims, first stating you have no no claims, then remembering you do and requesting a 75% reduction of the initial quote? Bet the first quote isn't 4 times higher on most cars (may not apply to Supes).

From our perspective this thread is a positive as it shows a couple of main issues that all insurance companies have to deal with which Sky Insurance has received recent criticism about.

The original poster is a young driver who lives in a high risk area. He has just received a quote of £6k.

1) High Risk & restricted postcodes

Our comment on this is: Where as other insurance companies will give you a sky high figure as a polite way of saying - we cant insure you in that area, Sky Insurance will usually not do this, if you live in a postcode which we cannot insure we will tell you and offer our apologies. We are governed by our insurers guides and if they are unwilling to insure in a particular area, we go along with that. If we override these rules we will be insuring Supras in high risk areas and claims stats will be poor. By saying no in the first place we keep our claim stats low and are able to pass savings on to club members who live in lower risk areas. If this is deemed as unfair, so beit.

The car club scheme we have works very well for the all of our affiliated clubs but there are always going to be the odd member who we cannot help out, unfortunately due to the nature of forums and the fact we are active on this forum we tend to get negative criticism directed towards us.

2) Younger drivers & drivers with no Supra experience

We will try and help out any member, but like all insurance companies, if we view a driver as high risk the premium will reflect this or we will state we are unable to insure them.

When we started the Supra club insurance scheme, supras were worth a lot more money and weren't able to be bought by your average Joe. We have seen an influx of younger, higher risk members contacting us for quotes, these seem to be the customers we have to say no to, again due to nature of forum based discussion we receive negative criticism about this as well.

This thread shows that Sky are not the only insurance company who have restrictions in place.

We do insure a huge amount of Supras so the club scheme does work well. We have club members interests at heart, we offer discount for clubs members, we offer our services over the forum and we will bend over backweards to help our customers in the event of any problems.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to put our points accross. Apologies for deviating slightly off topic.

Good post, makes a lot of sense

Some insurance companies recognise a NCB built up under another policy. When I bought my Porsche, I had no NCB and had been driving under my wifes policy as a named driver for 10 yrs. Neither of us during that time had a claim made aginst us. When I applied for insurance for myself I was given full NCB.

Guess I live in a nice area and have a good driving record.;)

I know my age plays a big play into it. When I turn 21 in july I will have had 4 total clean years. I've had NO convictions, bans or anything. Totaly clean license which is quite suprising for a young lad I know lol.

I got a quote for BOTH a TT and n/a and I kid you not but even an n/a will set me bac 5 and half k!!!!

I 'unfortunatly' live in a very crappy part of manchester and that is oldham. Not the best to live believe me I know but its not like I'm leavin it on the streets. Got my own little garage near by which is alarmed and locked but to no avail! This country is getin f*in worse, can't even make decent living without them robbing you of every penny you own!!

it's disgusting. but i suppose if its stops poor 18 year old boys from killing themselves in it, then its worth it. But even then. :search:

So was it necessary for you to post link to all the insurance companies there. What was the purpose of that I wonder?

Rather than typing out all the insurance companies on this thread (as people are suggesting all different companies), I just copied and pasted the block from this chap's website, which I have practically gone through now..

i was with greenlight, but i don't think they do imports anymore. Do they?

I spoke to a top guy at Coversure (Rallysure) who basically told me they don't insure imports either and a lot of companies have also stopped (they're trying to become more and more automated).. Reasons included more expensive parts, longer lead time to obtain parts and therefore more complaining customers and more expense for hire cars. Plus of course, they simply were dealing with too many accidents and not making any money..

Best bet he said was UK Supra with no engine mods..

Maybe this is why the value of Supra's are also dropping... Very limited insurance...

And my second cousin is 26 but can get insurance on a £80k Porsche!!

Try HSBC - they did me a quote that was 25% of what my ex-insurance company asked for, and similarly lower than many import-friendly places.

One possible issue with them is that I haven't tried claiming yet (thankfully). There's always the possibility they're bar stewards when that happens.

Well I think I've found the lowest I can possibly go at this stage. Put it under me mums address and comes back at £2175. It sounds a lot but for someone of my age its not bad as some people I know are getin quotes like that for clios and puntos!

I'm pleased with it for now but I got a lot to sort before I go ahead. Thanks for input and advice guys :D
