Nightmare with insurance!

My god it is SO hard for me to get decent insurance on a supra even though I've have 3years clean license and 3 years no claim but because of the area I live I CANNOT get quoted less than 6K annualy even though A. It will have milege restriction per year, up to 3000 a year but it would be used 3 or 4 times a month, rest of the time it be locked in a garage. Now if I change the address to my mums place it drops to 3000 and that's being left on the street! I'd have no problem with paying that off but I realy don't want to have to travel 30+ miles every weekend I decide to use it. Kind of frustrating!

6K!! I've never heard of a quote so high. What age are you and do you have convictions?

Edit - just seen your age. At 20 you're going to stuggle if it's for a TT, but even so 6k is madness for any Supra unless you've had a ban/DD imposed in the past

I know my age plays a big play into it. When I turn 21 in july I will have had 4 total clean years. I've had NO convictions, bans or anything. Totaly clean license which is quite suprising for a young lad I know lol.

I got a quote for BOTH a TT and n/a and I kid you not but even an n/a will set me bac 5 and half k!!!!

I 'unfortunatly' live in a very crappy part of manchester and that is oldham. Not the best to live believe me I know but its not like I'm leavin it on the streets. Got my own little garage near by which is alarmed and locked but to no avail! This country is getin f*in worse, can't even make decent living without them robbing you of every penny you own!!

I feel for you mate, I really do, but if you own a nickable car in a blacklisted postcode you're going to get killed on insurance no matter what your own :( However Supra's are still very cheap to insure compared to most other jspec cars of this power level.

I received a quote of £6k when looking for renewals, 24 with 5 years NCB too!

You're not the first club member with "Lancashire" as your area to say you're having MAJOR issues getting decent insurance quotes either!

No he's not and it's really worrying me :(

I don't get insurance. I used to live in a pretty decent suburb of Southampton. When I moved back towards the city centre and areas more likely to be prone to "issues" with crime, car thefts etc, my car insurance actually reduced :blink:

Then my renewal quote on the Supra was a good £150 more than what I paid for my first year with it.

I guess they just hope that most people out there say "ok" to the first figure they hear. I think the guys at Sky hated me by time I'd finished sorting my insurance - they'd reduced it by nearly 33% due to all my haggling :D

I guess the only option left is to leave it at my mums address then pick it up on a weekend. Surely the fact that having restricted milage and weekend use only would have some effect on my premium?

I guess they judge that it's left at home while you're out all day, which means it's a higher theft risk or something like that. Who knows?!

The strangest thing though at my address I want to get it insured under has a LOCKED, ALARMED garage which is 1 of my mates 5 minutes from me.

At my mums address it would be out on the street! Doesn't make any sence to me :search:

Who is giving you 6k as your best quote?

I understand that some area's are high but 2k is high, not 6.

Scott =op

That would be my current insurer which I have for my work horse and that's e-car. Been with them since I 1st got on the road cause they offered me what I required at the time and the BEST price.

Hmmm maybe yur right and driving it more would help but its just so frustrating that I've got the money to drop on the car I've been wanting since, yes that's right, the fast and the furious! Lol and its just so frustrating that the only thing holding me back is insurance! Cost for body repairs or mechanical is not as issue due to that being my job and has bin since leaving school so the ONLY other thing money wise I'd need to put into this is jungle juice!! GRRRR so annoying!

From our perspective this thread is a positive as it shows a couple of main issues that all insurance companies have to deal with which Sky Insurance has received recent criticism about.

The original poster is a young driver who lives in a high risk area. He has just received a quote of £6k.

1) High Risk & restricted postcodes

Our comment on this is: Where as other insurance companies will give you a sky high figure as a polite way of saying - we cant insure you in that area, Sky Insurance will usually not do this, if you live in a postcode which we cannot insure we will tell you and offer our apologies. We are governed by our insurers guides and if they are unwilling to insure in a particular area, we go along with that. If we override these rules we will be insuring Supras in high risk areas and claims stats will be poor. By saying no in the first place we keep our claim stats low and are able to pass savings on to club members who live in lower risk areas. If this is deemed as unfair, so beit.

The car club scheme we have works very well for the all of our affiliated clubs but there are always going to be the odd member who we cannot help out, unfortunately due to the nature of forums and the fact we are active on this forum we tend to get negative criticism directed towards us.

2) Younger drivers & drivers with no Supra experience

We will try and help out any member, but like all insurance companies, if we view a driver as high risk the premium will reflect this or we will state we are unable to insure them.

When we started the Supra club insurance scheme, supras were worth a lot more money and weren't able to be bought by your average Joe. We have seen an influx of younger, higher risk members contacting us for quotes, these seem to be the customers we have to say no to, again due to nature of forum based discussion we receive negative criticism about this as well.

This thread shows that Sky are not the only insurance company who have restrictions in place.

We do insure a huge amount of Supras so the club scheme does work well. We have club members interests at heart, we offer discount for clubs members, we offer our services over the forum and we will bend over backweards to help our customers in the event of any problems.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to put our points accross. Apologies for deviating slightly off topic.

I thought I would add to this post because I am frustrated and staggered at how the system "works" and that a 20 year old get insurance, yet I can't!!

I'm 25 with no convictions, no accidents, no previous points and been driving for 8 years. I had been on parents insurance till 21 and then managed to get 2 years no claims against my name. It turns out that because I didn't continue my own insurance as I have been on my company policy (which has included me driving a Mercedes E320 which is quite quick) it has been 2 years since my no claims ended so I have lost it all and have to start from 0yrs!!

Furthermore, I still have a GSXR 600 motorbike (0-60 in 3.8 secs) and have 4 years no claims (this year being my fifth - I paid £260 TPFT this year). I mean no disrespect but those of you who have ridden motorbike's know that you can get into trouble quicker than in cars and I personally believe more skill/better awareness of the road is required. No matter - motorbike insurance counts for nothing!

Anyway, that aside, I am due to undertake my professional exams next month which marks 3 years hard work and joining a professional body which can barr you for having a motoring conviction! To add to the pot, I own my own property and would store the car in a brick double garage - oh and I would only use the car at the weekend/fortnightly.

I was trying to get a quote for a big single supra and you can guess what has happened next. Nothing against Sky Insurance but they outright refused to insure me, saying at the beginning of the phone call that it was not the car they look at, but the "person driving". About 10 insurers I phoned today wouldn't cover me/the car (too many mods - apparently above 6) either! One salesman told me the computer said I had to be 35 years of age before I could get insurance!

:rolleyes::blink::search:
