Kranz
You have to ensure that the MOT centre actually have a written record of the appointment, or else you're going to be in trubble if you're stopped. You're also covered on the way back from the MOT if it fails, but if the car has mechanical defects then it may not be roadworthy and may get you a fine & points for being on the road in an unroadworthy condition! It also MUST be insured

Homer
Sorry to drag this one back, but I wanted to double check this and see if there was any fresh info as I believe the tax law might have changed recently. The car's tax disc expired in 2005, it has no MOT, but will have short term insurance through the policy on my daily car. If I pre-book an MOT can I legally drive it on the road without a tax disc? I don't want to get stopped and get slapped with a fine & points for an offence (I.e. them saying that the insurance policy is invalid because the car is untaxed, or them even impounding it) I phoned the police advice line and though the helpful lady said it would 'probably' be okay she didn't seem 100% convincing! RiceRocket
If I pre-book an MOT can I legally drive it on the road without a tax disc? How else would you get the MOT certificate to get the tax disc!
Homer
Ring a big garage dealer like your local Mr t and see what they say I did and they were utterly clueless. The car is going to ToyotaGT for a final check and MOT, I would never let Toyota dealer monkeys near the car. http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/information/InfoCentre/ItemDetails.aspx?sid=1520#4 Thanks, but that only explains the MOT explaination, not the tax one. How else would you get the MOT certificate to get the tax disc! That's kind of the point, the only person that's given a direct answer is Kranz (posted above), everyone else I've asked, including the police advice line and a local traffic officer have been rather unspecific whether it'd be legal or not
Class One
I can 100% guarantee that as long as there is valid insurance for the vehicle the you can drive it on a road to a pre booked mot test and back again.
