Justin Posted July 19, 2002 Share Posted July 19, 2002 I have a problem with the front end vibrating at 'higher' speeds. I guess it is a long shot but some of you may be able to help. At this 'higher speed' the front end vibrates quite badly in a vertical/up and down type motion (as if you are driving over those raised yellow lines approaching a roundabout) Most of the feedback is coming from the steering wheel but some through the pedals and seat. The bonnet is also going up and down. I have recently had a full service, all 4 brake pads replaced so the wheels were removed and refitted. From the symptoms is it likely to be: Suspension? Dodgy plastic wheel spacers? Balancing? Tracking? Alignment? Car falling in half due to the targa top? Non standard front spoiler lip that relaced the active one, ie aero dynamics? Three figure (not on the UK highway of course) and what were the road conditions - wet dry etc.? I assume you've checked your wheel balance. Have you looked at your dampers recently? The bonnet will resonate with any vibration as it's not very rigid. It's unlikely to be an aero problem as that would most likey lift the front end and feel like aquaplaning. Guest Nick Harris Posted July 20, 2002 Share Posted July 20, 2002 The centre bore is how the wheel is actually centred on the hub NOT the nuts, if a monkey with a wrench tightens the nuts hap-hazardly, then the cheap plastic spacer is crimped and the wheel will no longer be centred correctly, if it is slight then the wheel behaves exactly as described, hence the reference to the "and the wheel correctly butted up to the hub." bit in my post. Justin Posted July 20, 2002 Author Share Posted July 20, 2002 Nick thanks, this could be the problem. When the mechanic took one of the wheels off he said that the red plastic spacer snapped. He tried to fix it and said it would be OK but maybe it is at the end of its useful life. I'm going to try to source some metal ones that won't squash when the wheel is put back on and tightened up.
