Evening folks

My dad is buying my mum a new 4x4 in order to better enable her to transport the new dog around..........choices are below.....both brand new.........but cant decide which to get..........can anyone recommend one ?

Toyota RAV-4 VVti XT3 5 Door Petrol Auto

Honda CR-V 2.0 VTEC 5 Door Petrol Auto

Anyone care to shed some advice and maybe opinions / experiences of either to help make a choice ? Obviously i expect being a Toyota Forum the majority to sway towards Rav-4 lol !!

Cheers folks

Michael

I would want to be biased as i have a Toyota Soop but i work for Suzuki as a Salesman and we have Honda next door but i would have the Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 Petrol 2.7 V6 or the 2litre Tdi. The suzuki is as reliable as the Rav and the Honda and alot better value for money.

The CRV is nice to drive as its fairly simular to drive as a car with intelegent 4x4 which cuts in when the wheels slip but it is terrible of road. @ a price of around £19500 on average.

The rav is ok but as a perminent 4x4 you get a lovely wine from the front hubs and as they wear service prices are higher than the other two. The Rav is fairly priced but only till you add the extras then you get stung hard. The rear door also fails to open all the way causing alot of hassel.

The suzuki is more roomy, due to a proper ladder chassis is superb off road and @ around £18500 on average for the full spec is exellent value for money.

It also has a selectable 4x4 system to save fuel and service costs.

The only other option if they arnt gonna go off road to much is the new CRV Diesel at around £20250 on the road due out in march is better than the petrol CRV to Drive, more economical than all its competitors and will hold about 15% off its value over the next 3yrs of use more than the other cars.

Any more info just email me or post a reply.

Hope this helps.

Rob

I tried not to be biased towards the suzuki :D

Basically its only going to be used for shopping...........transferring a Dobermann from A-B, beach, parks etc. And the occasional trip shopping into the City Centre. So never off road, and not a lot of mileage at all.

Honda seems more reliable, but Toyota seems a bit more specced...........!?!

A work colleague bought a Honda CR-V last year (new), and hasn't stopped complaining about it since! Poor fuel consumption, no gadgets, noisy, very low spec really.

Have you thought about a 5 door Shogun Pinin? They are quite nice to drive, and have lots of useful stuff and a good computer display.

Audi Quattro (short wheel-base) for me please.... thankyou very much.

Or an RS200..... you can select between 4WD and RWD on those.

Wouldn't buy any of this soft roader cronk! If you want big interior space then go for a T40 Volvo or a big Audi estate etc. Those big tall cars on raised chassis only cost you more in fuel, brake wear, tyre wear etc. etc. They don't handle, they don't go off road.... everyone hates them... you'll be ridiculed... you'll have stones chucked at you... you'll end up in hell !!

(Have I taken that a bit too far? :) )

because it's a big dog and the headroom in a car isn't very good? I would if I could. Plus car parks get muddy etc

I am not sure I get the logic there. The Rav 4 is almost a car and has limited headroom as does the CRV and the muddy car parks will dirty a rev 4 as well as a big car

I'm talking about the boot area- presuming a dog would travel in the boot section?? Mums Rav 4 boot has enough head room but isn't big enough depth wise I'd say, no idea about the Suzuki though...?

As for the mud I meant the 4wd part, when they get stuck etc. Plus higher ground clearance for those rutted car park entrances :D

If I was on a small budget I'd get an imported Pajero as they have good spec, plenty of head room, 4x4 plus good ground clearence.

If more money was available I'd go with the Vitara, friend owned one and hammered it to hell on and off road. It just wouldn't go wrong (barring smashing the odd body panel when off road of course).
