Conrad
I have a Laptop for sale and will do the same job but faster..by the sounds of it. it's a Dell Inspiron 8600 with XP pro if your interested. Definitely interested, permitting they give me a refund on this laptop. Can you PM me a price bud? If not though, anyone else got any suggestions on what systems to go for? Any cheap deals on the net people would recommend? I'm annoyed I didn't look more into this. I stupidly thought that spec system would be enough for Vista as it's more than enough for XP. Conrad
Can anyone explain what this means: RAM / Max Supported Size: upgradeable to 2 GB using two soDIMM modules I've read the terms and condition of the sale and they charge a 15% handling fee if I return it - that will be around 40 quid!! I think it may be cheaper to upgrade what I've already bought. It currently has 512mb of DDR2 ram - do I just by another stick of the same stuff? What does that above mean? carl0s
I would start by uninstalling Norton Antivirus/Internet Security/360 and see how that improves things. Alternatively, the hard drive might be knackered. Check the System event log for red disk errors.
and1c
Avoid macs IMO Remove Vista, add another 512mb memory and install XP Pro. and it should be usable then...or send it back..

carl0s
I just got a nice deal for my mum's birthday off eBay. HP Compaq nc6230 1.86GHz Centrino/Pentium-M 1.5gb RAM 14.1" (sweet spot IMO) 60gb HDD DVD/CDROM Wifi Slim, reasonably well made thinkpad-like-ish XP Pro COA, upgraded to Vista ultimate £
miko_supra
vista ran really slow on my computer. it was a fairly low spec pc and it took about 5 mins to fully start up. i basically took everything off that wasnt necessary. vista is full of fancy stuff to make it look pretty which can be easily switched off and you can also stop programs from loading at start up (the ones that create the icons on the bottom right of the tool bar.) as well as a couple of other things... i managed to get it starting up in about 1 minute
SILKYSMOOTH
I would try this 1st too...and see if it makes a noticable difference.

Konrad
Who is insane enough to run Vista anyway? If it wouldn't be pain on a$$ to get all macromedia flashes and such on Win98SE, I would stay with this one Right now using XP Pro and it's smooth, quick and functional (although I still have Win98SE on other computer - this is what I call quick system )
ivan
As everyone else has said - ditch Vista and install XP.
carl0s
Good price, screen is tiny though and the hard drive is very very small too my good man, wana be getting minimum of 120gb these days Screen is the perfect size for a laptop. 14.1" is the sweet spot. I have 14.1" SXGA+ on mine. My mum isn't ripping DVDs either so 60gb is fine. It's all much better than anything I could have bought new for anything like that money.
