Arggh! - just bought brand new laptop and it's rubbish!

My girlfriends Mom entrusted me with buying a new budget laptop. I opted for this one here

The thing is it's unbelievably slow. From when you turn it on to when Vista is fully loaded it takes 8 minutes! Shutting down takes just as long and it's only running Avast Anti Virus. Doesn't sound that long but believe me it is!!! Plus it freezes every now and again for about 30 secs! It's as if it's full of viruses but it's not as it's brand new!

Is this just Vista that's slowing it down? If so what kind of spec will run it acceptably?

I looked at refurbed XP Laptops on Ebay but opted for this Vista one to get a warranty.

Any advice? I'm thinking I'll send it back.

I bought this for my daughter on Monday!!

Really pleased with it for the price. On start up though, Vista did seem to tkae a while but once loaded it was quite impressive!!

I was told that Vista needs 512Mb just to run properly, is that true?

Yup absolute minimum without it crashing round your ears is 512. I wouldn't install Vista on a system with any less than 1gb, i always recommend 2gb.

Vista is very choosey but if you give it the right tools i find it to be a great OS.

I was told that if I was going to get Vista, 1GB is a minimum if you want it to run as you'd expect XP to run - ie at "normal" speeds. I've got 2GB here with XP and compared to my old laptop it goes like SOAS :D

Echoing what people have said before me;

- That sounds like good performance for Vista on that spec

- For Vista you need more RAM

- Upgrade to WinXP (you should have downgrade rights with Vista), and it'll be good (faster, quicker boot, and stop freezing)

- Although they're not for everyone, a lot of people I know have switched to Mac now

PS - I spent a lot more than that on a Vista system from a tier one manufacturer for work, stuffed full of RAM and with a solid state hard drive. It was still painfully slow, crashed daily (hourly at home, as my house wasn't air conditioned like work, and it overheated due to running flat out), and wireless needed configuring from the command line each morning. Since I upgraded to WinXP it's been just perfect :)
