Ian R
I have always been a Porsche lover and i'm considering a 996 Carrera 2 or 4 now my question is how will they stack up against a T78 supra ??? Considering performance image and looks ....
Gazboy
Well the 3.6 is about even to a stock tt, maybe a smidge quicker in the real world, on paper it is faster. The 3.4 is a smidge slower in the real world but as fast on paper- if that all makes sense. I'm basing this on experiance of my car vs various 996's I've raced with at Brunters or followed to a meet. Edit- looks is subjective, I like both with areokits fitted. Image- 911 has the Supra licked, I'd rather be thought of as a rich tosser than a chav any day of the week. Bobbeh
Image and looks are a matter of opinion. Performance wise a properly tuned T-78 Supra would slaughter a 996, even tho its an old school turbo, its still a good sized one.

marc_p
If your single look at it this way, I think you would get more women in the porsche.
Ian R
How about around the Nurburgring for example ??
Bobbeh
Are all 996 turbos? I'm talking about the T-78 being an old school turbo. Gaz, both cars depends on the driver at the end of the day Just look at Bignum and his BPU supra vs the GT3 at Bedford autodrome, then picture a Supra with double the power. Ian, have you been challenged to a race or something?

Nope considering getting rid of the T78 for a carrera just checked lap times of a 996 c2 laps the ring in 8.
matt k
Do you have to be rich to own a 996?
Bobbeh
I think the new Golf GTI has a time of 8:15.. does that make you want one of those

Ian R
I think the new Golf GTI has a time of 8:15.. does that make you want one of those Its not so much lap times TBH . From looks and image Porsche wins hands down (IMO) but would I miss the power and how much difference would there be ?? Is what I'm asking, (fun factor) not looking motorway drags more point to point.
Bobbeh
I'm sure it would be a blast to own, no doubt about it, a lot less raw than the Supra (especially single turbo'd). So what Gaz said previously answers that point Performance wise they compare well to stock TTs.
Gazboy
I'm talking about give and take A and B roads Bobbeh- race tracks & motorways are fairly obvious the T78 will be much faster.
Bobbeh
I know, and I said I agree with your comments. The Supra would do better if it was a manual though.
matt k
I think most Porsches look turd, but I would concur that the Supra loses out to the Image of the 996 to most people.....the question is if you remove the opinion of the general public which car would you choose? Gazboy
Sorry mate, didn't see your post. Matt, I would love a car like Jakes or Jay's but for me the Supras image is damaged beyond salvage, so with that and the lack of kiddie seats that fit I shall be moving to a 996, assuming nothing significant bites me on the arse. I have no doubt that both members cars mentioned are better than a 996 in every way, including a GT2.

Chris Wilson
I was looking at this earlier, and depending on tub condition NOW I think it's a cheap car for track days, would cost a lot more to make another: http://www.race-cars.com/carsales/porsche/1203551676/1203551676ss.htm

TBH I couldnt give a rats ass about what other people thought about my car, I own it for my own reasons regardless of the image or worry about what someone else thinks... and it depends where you are, you get a lot more appreciation on the continent where as the Porkas just send people asleep. My trips to the Ring and le Mans are good examples of this experience, the Supra's turn up and people look as they're rare, whereas the Porsches are common as muck in the car park much like the M3s. We did get a lot of enthusiasts and Toyota fans generally show interest in our collection of 'jap crap'. Personally I'd take the GT2 - now thats a special 996 Anyway, each to their own

Bobbeh won't like this but I'm thinking M3 or 911 at the moment. I can't afford to go over 40k though, 30k really - unless it's something I desperately want - and you don't seem to get the nicer 996 ones for that sort of money. They're all Tips and/or have hideous interiors. The 996 also has those weird headlights which I don't like at all. I can see me ending up with an M3/CSL or another Supra at this rate Ian, what sort of money are you loking at spending?
