Joining the Army

Hi all I'm 26 & still live with my parents and for about 6months now been looking at changing jobs. Getting really board of working behind a desk only do this because of the money. Learnt the hard way that money isn't everything and being happy in your job is. I have been looking at different jobs all working with my hands this is what I enjoy the most. I was talking to a friend about 1 month ago and he was asking me questions what sort of things I like doing. After about 1 hour he said you should join the army, didn't think much of it at first but keep thinking back to this. So watched that Ross Kemp in Afghanistan and that’s got me even more interested.

Well I'm after some info from the army lads on here anything that might help me make a decision. I'm going to the recruitment office on the weekend but expect they will just hard sell it to me.

If watching the Ross Kemp prog made you even keener to join then you're probably cut out for it.

All I thought was "F### that for a game of soldiers"

I don't know why I just think it really appeals to me. Everyone keeps saying "but you could be killed" but thats what I like about it. I've lived in the same town all my life, same friends same faces, only ever been on package holidays always had the protection of my family. To be honest I want to live a life that I think I have earnt not one where it's all been done for and given to me.

Sorry if this doesn't make sence not to good with words.:)

May i ask what about the ross kemp show made you want to join the Army ?

What are you looking for, do you want to be front line infantry or perhaps engineers or artillery (can be front line too)

What is your fitness like are you able to take a lot of rough with the smooth ?

What I got with the Ross Kemp show was how close they all were, the things they got to see, camping under the stars, getting dirty and not to sound to sick but the fighting. I would be looking at front line infantry/engineers.

Been going the gym on and off for 3 years so quite fit and if I have to train for something I will do.

Which is it ? do you have an idea of unit, how long you want to serve (minimum 4 years)

It can be an incredibly miserable tiring and overwhelming experience, cameras do not pick up the suffering you sometimes have to go through.

Are you looking at the paras ? you will need a very high level of fitness for that you will need it if you want to pass p company ;)

There are lots of spells where you are in unit and doing nothing worthwhile, cleaning the barracks cleaning equipment etc. as a junior rank expect to get dicked for all manner of crap duties including guard duty or working in the officers or sargeants mess !

I know army life isn't all action but I've been an apprentice so know about getting the crap jobs and being kicked around but thats one thing I can handle the ruff with the smooth.

Might be going back to cyprus to live in the near future (maybe this year), coz I am so bored of the UK, So I will have to do 3-6 months national service in the Army. Time should fly by, nothing like 4 years, the nationals have to do 26 months compulsory as soon as they finish school. So I got it lucky! I wanted to join when I was 17 but never had the chance, chose to educate myself instead, I wish I did it when I was younger coz now I am 33 and cant be asked to waste time

not to good with words.:)

You would be perfect then for front line work :p

seriously though, everyone i've known on more than a passing hello basis that had been in the army has either dropped out or come out hating it......... What you see on the Kemp docu was all the glitz and action, they wont show you sitting there for days on end bored out of your tree in stupid heats

P.s one of my mates was a para, he got out because he was being sent all over the world to do nothing and he didnt even know what he was fighting for. Being ordered to shoot at a group of people for what he believed to be celebratory fire (muzzle flair was going upwards), others just shot and killed them, he chose not to and, well got trouble for it, but thats another story

first day i crossed the iraqi boarder i was ordered by a USMC ssgt to shoot a man standing on top of a building because he had guns, i told him no because i could see no gun, i told him to clear the house an i will mark the man on the roof until they are done, they sent two ssgt`s and a captain to clear the house (and these were the 3 top men from the troop) the capt. volleyed the door and went to run though when the door flew back and smacked him on his arse while the two staffy`s stood there, the capt. then started screaming at the two guys and they ran in to clear the house after 2 mins they came out and guess what .........................

.......there were no guns.

just because he out ranked me didnt mean i had to slot the guy, i thought i did well to not budge on not carrying out the order, i dont know if it would of affected me , but i guess i am glad not to know if it would have :D

there are many pros and cons to the army

but as said before alot of people get out hating and rezenting (sp) the army

im still in (just) and am thinking of getting out and trying something new

but being on the tanks does bring a smile to my face

but the time iv spent in the army going all over england and the world, there is one thing that i have learnt

hurry up and wait

and last minute dot com

you spend a lot of time doing nothing waiting for something

and then when that something comes along youve got to do 20hrs of work in the next 5 mins
