imi
Now that the HD DVD standard has been set I am in the market for a PS3 as a DVD player and a games console. Some Questions. - I have heard that they are changing the laser on the PS3 so that it reads the dual-layer BlueRay better - there was some talk over perhaps a newer dye being used to produce the discs and the risk of older PS3s not being able to read the new discs....any truth in that? - Are all the current 40gb PS3 65nm core? When is the 45nm core coming out? - Any recommendations, shoot'em up / good racing or sports games would do. - Where is the best place to get a bundle with: 2 controllers Decent HDMI cable Remote control Decent games (2 or more would be sufficient)

Alex
1. BlueRay was upgraded and the PS3 usually gets a firmware upgrade that keeps it up to date - it's the big advantage the PS3 has over other players. 2. I doubt they will update the Cell processor until the PS4....the Cell processor is about to be made by Toshiba whould you believe ie the company battling Sony over the HD formats! 3 and 4. pass. I would very much doubt that would make existing systems redundant as such, just mean newer systems are cheaper to produce. With regard to the updates Alex is talking about, thats like the firmware that the player needs to run the new features on blu ray discs and how it processes the images. Thats always updateable and free with the PS3 network OS downloads.
imi
i've been reading about the PS3 and its a lovely piece of kit - a lot of computing power packaged in a really nice looking kit. Just need to find a place that gets me a good price for the bundle that I want. Thx for the advice guys; Call of Duty 4 is definetely one of the games I want. Any other decent multiplayer game? Pete
I still think they're expensive and there's no real killer game over what's available on the PC. I'll leave it a bit I reckon.

AndyT
CoD4 has a mad following online on Xbox and PS3. Addictive as hell. Be prepared for divorce proceedings Lol.
GazzaGSi
Yep, another for COD4 here. First time I played online with that my eyes were red and sore and I felt like my hands were gonna drop off. Addictive to say the least. Ive just completed Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and again, another mint title. Never wanted to put it down. The story line is quite intriguing with abit of a twist Both of these have relatively short single player modes though. I did Uncharted in 9hrs (about an hr or so aday playing, not all at once) on normal and didnt bust a gut to get through, tried exploring to find all the treasures so it can be done quicker. Colin McRae Dirt is another excellent game, probably the best drving sim/racer out at the moment but ive not played Burnout other than the demo so cant compare. Motorstorm and Resistance Fall of Man are both good games, especially with them being released on the PS3 release date. Endless fun online with both. Heres a post I wrote on another forum FYI: Since then ive got through, COD4, Assassin Creed, Dirt, Splinter cell, NFS pro street, Rainbow 6 vegas Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and days on fifa online. Currently getting through Uncharted: Drakes Fortune which is stunning and a decent ps3 exclusive (others being motorstorm, heavenly sword, FoM and Warhawk - online game only, meant to be ace, just not apealed to me). Main exclusive titles for the ps3 are: Killzone 2: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=83940 Gran turismo 5 Metal gear solid 5 Haze - once a timed exclusive, apparantly fully:http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=24567 Final Fantasy XIII Final Fantasy Versus XIII Getaway 3 LttleBigPlanet As well as 'Home' Heres a rough list of PS3 exclusives: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=86124 & current on the shelf library: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=78574 Also acouple of other interesting details: Remote play, PS3 on PSP: http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=20958 Skype: http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=24077 As well as this, the PS3 can be used as a media server so everything like music, pics and videos can be streamed wirelessly from your PC. If the video format is not supported it is transcoded while in transfer. I use TVersity to do this. Hope it helps
Thorin
I should be getting one second hand next weekend. 80GB I think, but I understand you can just stick any old 2.5" SATA drive in them. Might have to buy a 320GB drive. The media server stuff is interesting me more at the moment, my old DivX DVD player died a long time ago and the only DVD player I have is the PS2 which is cack. supra steveo
what do you mean i thought the PS3 were region free
Bobbeh
About 40% of Blu Ray discs are region protected, there are 3 regions, we are region 2 in the UK and Europe, USA and Japan is region 1. Region 3 is the middle east etc. You can play region free disks on any machine, but not region protected ones.

Bobbeh
You need to install some software on the machine acting as the media server so the PS3 can detect it on the network.

Divx is now playable on PS3 from the latest (or 1 before) firmware upgrade. My LG Viewty records in Divx and plays these on the PS3 with no probs now. How does this work dude? I can't find any media servers even though my laptop is wireless etc This is what I use: http://www.tversity.com/home Never had a problem with it, great piece of software. As Bobbeh said, afew bluray movies are region locked. The games arnt though
