TLicense
All, I'm thinking it may be time to upgrade my pc. My current spec is:- AMD 700 athlon 256MB ram (not sure what type - is there an easy way to find out? It's about 4 years old.) Nvidea geforce 4600ti 128mb graphics card 15GB HD Soundblaster live soundcard. I'm also using a wireless network adsl net connection. So basically I'm looking for a motherboard/cpu/ram package that is going to last me another 3/4 years. Ideally I'd like about 1GB of ram, minimum of 521Mb, 80GB hdd, >2GHz processor and a motherboard to match. I'm happy to use my existing sound and graphics cards What would you guys recommend and where would you suggest the bargains are to be had? A friend of mine swears by ebuyer, but I've always gone Dabs in the past. Suggestions please... Tony
GeordieSteve
Don't bother with a little 80Gb drive. These days there's little difference between the price of a 80Gb drive and a 200Gb drive
SimonB
Definitely Ebuyer, they are cheaper than Dabs by a fair bit. Also Dabs are a nightmare if anything doesn't work and needs returning. A friend of mine at work had all sorts of trouble getting a return code out of them - in the end he pretended to be a business customer wanting loads of PCs. They mysteriously replied to his email immediately then!

TLicense
Can anyone recommend a particular model of cpu and mother board? I have no idea which would be better than the other? Cheers
MONKEYmark
Can anyone recommend a particular model of cpu and mother board? I have no idea which would be better than the other? Cheersi prefer amd as they used to be better performance for the money. dont know what its like now. not upgraded mine in ages as it does everything i need it to do. they move on so fast these days. if you get a top spec comp and use your old graphics and sound would u not be holding it back. for what a ghrapics card and good sound card cost. when i upgrade ghraphics again i will go for dual monitor output and 256megs onboard. just look at some highend comps and see what specs they running. GeordieSteve
All depends what you intend to use your machine for to be honest. An average user will need a completely different machine to a gamer or someone wanting to edit movies
TLicense
Cheers guys, I probably do some gaming, but use the machine for CAD hence the high RAM requirements. The more I can get the better. (Some files we do at work are often >2Gb - but I don't intend to be doing anything that large at home) The graphics card I've got should be man enough for what I want it for, and I'm really not bothered about sounds at all. I've been looking at the AMD xp range. I can get a 3200 for about £100 which will be a massive improvement over my current set-up. With regards to RAM I take it DDR is the doggies? I can get a 80Gb HDD for £35 plus delivery, which will do me nicely, especially as I've got 60GB of i-pod if things start to get a bit tight, let alone the 15GB that's in there to start with. That reminds me, I'll have to use a dual boot system with Win2K on the 15GB drive and then XPpro on the 80GB. This shouldn't be a problem should it? Thanks again chaps, Tony
