6-pots & long travel

overspent

Recommended Posts

Some time ago I fitted a set of KAD 356mm 6-pots to my J-spec but have never really been very happy with the pedal feel, has anyone else had this experience? Is there a master cylinder with a larger bore available as I feel that the standard item is not displacing enough fluid to give a firm pedal?

What are the piston diameters of the front calipers? If you do find a bigger bore master cylinder pedal travel should decrease, but pedal EFFORt will INCREASE. Do you have to press the brake pedal hard to get the excess travel, or is it there before any effort is applied? I am wondering if the calipers or their mountings are deflecting?

you can buy uprated brake hoses which i believe give a better and firmer pedal.

ps. not saying that the job was't done right, but you can try and bleed the braking system again, special if its fitted with ABS as sometimes its very hard to remove all air in system without a pressure bleeder.

Pedal does not rise significantly if repeatedly pressed, have no doubts about the car stopping, but requires hard pressure, and has no real bite when applied even when they have warmed up, the kit was supplied by Paul Whiffin, so feel confident that it should be compatible, have driven a standard R33 GTR and the brakes on that are significantly better than mine.

I think Chris has done that. As you said you have never felt happy with it so these two this should be checked first.

When I fitted my brakes and hoses I had bubbles coming out quite a while after the colour of fluid changed in the bleed tubes, I flushed just over 1/3 of the total fill through each calliper to be sure.

The standard JDM master cylinder is rarely changed when bigger brakes are fitted. It is also a very reliable unit and failures are rare, at least on this BBS. That is not to say that yours could be a first.

From memory the AP 6 pots have a very similar displacement to the UK four pots so unless they are significant bigger bores the master cylinder efficiency should not be an issue.

I got the ap's fitted to my jap spec tt and i wasnt happy with them at first as they were juddering at 60mph plus and the pedal did travel a fair bit, but that was down to them being fitted very badly by a well known garage! but since sorting the problem out myself they are the dogs swingers, the brake pedal doesnt travel far at all, and they can stop the car in no time.

i did get my rear's uprated at the same time to uk spec with braded hose's all round so that might have something to do with it.
