Which 50" Plasma TV?

Whether or not you should go for full HD is also very much dependent on your viewing distance.

Scotster, the 700 is older but higher specced...if you have a decent sound system there is no reason to buy it over the 70B.

Very true.

As for the Kuro's, well I can honestly say I prefer the picture from the Panny (in a side by side test in a shop)...maybe the shop Kuro I saw was rubbish, it's just never wowed me like what others seem to get.

The out of the box settings for the Kuro's which I assume most retailers are using aren't particularly good, we bought a 42" one at Christmas and used the settings posted on avforums, it's very nice.

We were in Currys the other week and the sales guy was giving us all the spiel, he reckons that the Pioneer ones are top dog. He said the panels are the best on the market and he would recommend the non 1080p (768) pioneer over the rivals 1080p offerings.

The more knowledgeble members on avforums wouldn't argue with that.

Yup and the reason for that is how good it is with 720p. If you have ever seen one the picture is astounding. The colours are amazing and the black is superb.

Faaaaaaar too much money imo though. It isn't THAT much better than the panasonics.

The pioneer 720 50" screen is still 2k without a stand or speakers!

I did 3 months of research and went for the Panasonic PZ70. 1080p and a little over half the price of the pioneer! The pioneer IS better, but not twice as good.

The only thing that the pioneer does that the others dont is true 24hz handling. This really threw a spanner in the decision process for me, but I decided I wasnt prepared to pay the premium for it. I have given up trying to describe the issue, but basically under some circumstances, a small number of people will detect judder on slow pans on hd movies.

Anyways, my tv arrives tuesday, cant wait!

Really? Every review i have read said the 700 replaced the 70. Pretty sure i read that on the panasonic website too. Seems strange that they would take features away and take away an HDMi connection for the newer model.

The 70 was a slightly cut down version released due to the low sales of the flagship 700.

Its virtually identical apart from one less hdmi and a lesser sound system. I dont think the 700 accepts 24hz input though.

Right thanks for all the (passionate!) input guys... so I'm looking at a Panasonic really.

There's been a few similar model numbers for them posted, which should I go for? Is the 1080p model worth the extra over the non 1080p model? If I read this right, it's only Blue Ray that makes use of it so far.

Is there an el cheapo link to each Panasonic that's worth considering with large pictures of them because I know it'll likely end up being a case of which one looks most aesthetically pleasing to my other half!!!

Cheers,

Brian.

Brian, the main reason we went for the 1080 (pZ70) set, was that the frame and stand look much nicer in my/our opinion. The pX70 frame looks a bit cheap and old fashioned by comparison. 1080 IS a bit of a gimmick, but it doesnt hurt to have :D

I had a quick look on pricerunner and there looks to be about 200 quid difference between the two. A 50" tv is going to take up quite a bit of visual space so we thought it worth paying the extra for the more atractive looking set.

The panasonic's look stunning, just not as nice as the samsung or pioneer lol.

I would recommend going for the Panasonic TH-50PZ70B. In fact, when i have the dosh, thats the one i will be buying. A quick search found it for 1250 but i reckon you can find it cheaper than that.

The TH-50PX70PED, which is the non 1080p one, is around 900 quid but as already stated, its not as good looking.

1080p is of course a bit of a gimmick just now but i don't think it will be long before all major TV companies are broadcasting int his quality.

Oh, go to the panasonic website to see what they look like...

http://www.panasonic.co.uk/plasma-tv/index.htm

TH-50PZ70B Recommended with 2 HDMI's, 50" and 1080p

TH-50PZ700 Overkill but the best in the range with better sound and 3 HDMI's , 50" and 1080p

TH-50PX70 Cheaper option, non 1080p and not as good looking.

All IMO of course lol.

Thanks for the summary Scott, so it sounds like I'm going for the PZ70B but I should go for the PZ700 if I can find it for the same price? (Assuming the casing has the same styling)

The 700 is a fair bit more expensive (its still the flagship) and it also doesnt look as nice (imo)

Can you get to a big comet? We have a great one near us (by the Madjeski stadium) with them all on display.

Definately a good price.

Personally I'm going to rent the 42" version for a year and then buy the next gen as I feel ALL TV's atm haven't matured enough in 1080p/24fps mode.

As for the lack of HDMI inputs, personally my amp (Onkyo TX-SR875) has enough in's to cope and then it's 1 out from that in to the TV :)

Is it me or does that look like a different (uglier) casing?:

Does that model code denote the UK only model? Or are there imports with DVB tuners that may not work?

What's the rental cost like?

So if I buy a decent home theatre type amp I can just connect everything up to that and then I only need one HDMI cable from there to the TV?
