michael
Despite the forum offering a rather splendid calendar feature that allows people to show they want to attend events we still seem to get a lot of threads that are mainly composed of increasingly long lists of names. I'm curious about this - is it because members (and some events organisers) aren't aware of the calendar feature or that they just don't like it? Here's an event in the calendar and being used properly (although missing a link to the thread discussing it): http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=586&day=2008-2-23&c=1 And here's a list of names in a thread to show the other way people do things: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=139537 Which do people prefer and why? AndyT
Gotta say I prefer cut and paste simply because that's the way it's mostly been done. I do like the calendar, not sure what puts people off. Why do you ask?
michael
Why do you ask? Curiosity mainly, the calendar feature seems to be the ideal way of managing such things yet it doesn't get used by some of the events people or gets used in conjunction with lists in threads and the two rarely match up. I just wondered if members aren't aware of the calendar being there and if it should be "policy" to try and use it more so that events threads can be used to discuss things rather then collect names. DannyB
I use both, but i think the calendar option is easier, saves massive threads!!

michael
I'm lazy. Cut and paste seems quicker. Would you be less lazy if the poster of the events thread linked to the calendar entry so you were two clicks away from being on the list? Burna
I like the calendar and prefer when it's used. No chance of anyone being removed by accident when cutting and pasting. One thing I don't understand is how it would work for the JAE thread when members need to state which days they are attending, and not just an attending like the calendar seems to offer. Is there a way that this could be done with the calendar too?
Gaz6002
I'd be happy to do both TBH. At the end of the day most forum users only see/use the format we are chatting in now and so don't like to stray from what they know/like.

I agree the calendar is a lot neater. Subscription to an event days date wouldn't be a problem provided a link was included, which it is. The cut and paste is a little more informal though. Is there a way that this could be done with the calendar too? I'm sure the whole weekend can be broken down into days and then you just mark which days you're attending. It does seem less likely for mistakes (peoples names not being added/cut off lists etc) if people's names are in a calendar entry. Surely a link to the calendar from the person organising the event is the easiest option.
Burna
Oh I've just noticed there's a reminder function on the top right of the calendar list! Now that's good. I'll try that option with the calendar list for this Sundays pub meet and see what it does Simple things eh
Burna
I'm sure the whole weekend can be broken down into days and then you just mark which days you're attending. Like click Thur . Fri. Sat . Sun.? That surely would be better for people trying to organise the event too. Burna world update: Tried the reminder function and discovered it then allows you to pick a reminder time ie: how many hours before. Very good
Charlotte
Like click Thur . Fri. Sat . Sun.? That surely would be better for people trying to organise the event too. Yep, exactly like that. I mean that was the case when I was going a few years ago. Three clicks and then everyone knows where they are.

Tom S
We tried that for JAE last year and people didn't use the option. It became a nightmare trying to organize. I am aware that some people on this forum think every thing is easy. But I'd also like to point out that some peopple couldn't do the events organiser roles and quit because it was not for them. Seems the same people are the ones singing of the praises or a system which works for some events and not for others:taped: As ever the Events team are there to assist the members, and if the calender works all being good, only if people remember that if they accept an event they should remove themselves if they are no longer attending. This was not done for JAE as people who had said they would be there didn't turn up and name badges were made for them. Making the workload higher for us. michael
We tried that for JAE last year and people didn't use the option. . Because they didn't know about it or because you also ran a list of names and confused matters? I am aware that some people on this forum think every thing is easy. But I'd also like to point out that some peopple couldn't do the events organiser roles and quit because it was not for them. . Here we go, defensive Tom time I presume you are saying that I quit my position as an events organiser because I was incapable of doing it then? As you know I quit because I didn't want to have to hang up my personality and not be able to discuss things without mods sending me messages to say I shouldn't say certain things. As you also know I've continued to organise events since my name went back to being a normal colour. It's not a difficult job in the slightest, neither is adding a calendar entry and telling people to use the "I'm attending" link provided... well not to someone with a little bit of sense anyway. Seems the same people are the ones singing of the praises or a system which works for some events and not for others:taped:. I'm a little confused by this as it doesn't make sense but I *think* you are saying that the calendar feature isn't suitable for some events but is for others? Why do you think that? As ever the Events team are there to assist the members, and if the calender works all being good, only if people remember that if they accept an event they should remove themselves if they are no longer attending. . The calendar entry needs to be there and linked from the thread for it work effectively and as you rightly point out people need to know how to use it properly. But then this also applies to copy & paste I suppose. This was not done for JAE as people who had said they would be there didn't turn up and name badges were made for them. Making the workload higher for us. That's a failing of the members concerned though, not the system in place to make life easier surely? This isn't meant to be an attack on any of the current methods, I just remember that when I wrote my iTrader guide it helped increase the use of it and introduced people to new features they weren't aware of (which don't work anymore). I was thinking of doing something similar for the calendar in an attempt to make it easier for people to manage events but maybe I'm not up to the job because my name isn't green. Tom S
Michael, I posted on a internet forum, if you don't like it turn off the browser and do some thing else (In the words of JB) Also I only know what you wrote because I received an email, as you are on my ignore list, else I would not know
RedM
Michael, Get a hold of yourself and think what you are saying. Without the interminable lists certain members would be unable to make a complete hash of the simple act of cutting n' pasting and we wouldn't have huge sections of members going 'missing' from the list and all the subsequent re-editing that requires. I also think that it would be cruel to prevent some members from enjoying that 'look at me, LOOK AT ME, I'm going to XXXXXX show, ME! Aren't I cool? Look at me' vibe that adding ones name to a list causes.

michael
Michael, I posted on a internet forum, if you don't like it turn off the browser and do some thing else (In the words of JB) Also I only know what you wrote because I received an email, as you are on my ignore list, else I would not know How does this answer any of the points I've raised above? I'm trying to think of ways to educate the members on a feature that's neglected at present and enhance the way the events are listed and all you want to do is post retarded statements that just make you look silly. Why? It's great that you know you are on an Internet forum, that in itself removes some of the concern I have about your mental health, but I don't understand why you feel I'd want to "turn off the browser" when I started the thread and wish to discuss the topic contained with the members. Are you suggesting that your earlier comments should anger me or that they have wound me up in some way? Sorry to disappoint if that's the case, you are cluttering things up a little though. Thrilled to be on your ignore list (and wish my offer to pay for an enhanced ignore feature that covers you would be granted) but even more thrilled that you've decided to respond to my thread and that you've have an email about it. Thanks for your valuable input on this thread.
