Meguiars G220 Polisher

Recommended Posts

I am about to purchase a machine polisher. This will ultimately be used for personal and commercial use. Im choosing to stay away from the rotary types until i have more experience with machine polishing.

It seems the best options available are the Ultimate Detailing Machine, although i do not want to go for the US 110V product and can find little information on the UK spec version. The other option and the newest to be released is the Meguiars G220.

Has anyone had any experience with this that can give me some info good or bad, before i buy

Many thanks...

They seem to be breaking - I've never seen anyone post up about a Porter Cable going wrong on the detailing forums but there have been quite a few reports of the UDM and G220 stopping working. One G220 only lasted for 2 hours!

CYC will sort you out with a replacement (direct from Meguiars by the looks of the posts I've seen) with no problem at all, they are a great company to deal with etc, but it's still a pain if it does go.

Obviously there will probably be 100's of people who aren't having issues though, a shame quality control seems to be an issue, they look like good machines in theory and as you say it's much easier when they aren't 110v too.

Might be worth looking on http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/ and having a browse to see how people are getting on.

thanks very much guys. Have been searching that forum for a few weeks Michael, some really good info on there thanks. Thanks Supra-Lover, will check out that link to

I wasnt aware of the issues with the g220 unit. As you say, poor quality control. But, obviously far easier to get fixed when purchasing from a UK firm.

The polisher is the most useful/important tool with rfegard to detailing and i want to make sure i get the right product, that is also robust enough to handle heavy use within a detailing business.

My UDM went belly up after about 10 cars but contacted the place I got it from in the states and they sent me a new one within a week :)

The new one I got looks slightly revised and fingers crossed I'll have no hassles, really is a great bit of kit.

I would say gettting the right combos of mops and compounds is far more important than the machine ;)

I bought a porter cable a few months because quite a few people were looking at replacing with UDM's.

Have to say i have been really impressed. I was in a similar position to you , didnt dare go with a Rotary in fear of doing damage.

P.C is a real handy bit of kit and well worth the money i paid for it.

Thanks Todd. Do you know if there are any important differences between the g220 and the UDM that i may be missing?

Afraid not mate.

Agree with colsoop as well, getting to know the products is an even bigger hurdle, so many on the market and getting the right combo

Take a lot of what you read on detailing world with a pinch of salt IMO a lot of it's sales talk and every one has their own fav products.

Thanks guys. and yes in hindsight you are right with regard to most important kit. The combos dont appear to be something you can especially read about but more to do with experience, something that only comes with trial and error.

Am leaning towards the 220 at the mo. I do know that ive had some excellent results in the past with doing things by hand so cannot wait to get to grips with one of these :)

I have a porter-cable set from autopia. Did a lot of polishing on car / metal dials / paint stripping etc. Never let me down. Conversion means buying 110V transformer (not that expensive). If you want longer cable, there is info how to do it without slicing any cables - I've done it and it works a treat. Go for checked and prooved thing :)
