hadyn
i've accidently overfilled my oil on my tt after topping it up, its well over the full mark and can be seen on the wire of the stick, anything to panic about?
CJ
I remember being told that overfilling was worse than underfill. I would reccomend draining some out.
merckx
Yeah, I would definately take some out. When I bought my new van a couple of years ago It had too much oil and I remember reading in the Handbook about this possibly resulting in blown gaskets. GeordieSteve
Yep get it drained ASAP. Bloke I used to work with had to scrap his father in laws car coz he used to put a pint of oil in every time he filled up!!!! By the time my mate got to see the car, the oil was coming out the dip stick!
Dash Rendar
Mine was well overfilled by the previous owner. For the first month I owned it, it was spewing oil out of the BOV and the oil was collecting in a little river under the induction cone! I was worried about where the oil was coming from and my local garage told me it was a seal on #2 turbo. But now the oil level is right on the max on the dip stick, and no more oil is being ejected. So I think there was nothing wrong with the turbo afterall! I wish I'd taken other people's advice and drained some oil right from the start!! hadyn
mines been drinking oil since last saturday when i bought it, so im going to see if it continues to eat oil after topping up with 10/40 magnatec
Rob
I've told this story before, but it's a cracker... I ran my first ever car, 903cc Seat Ibiza, for about 16 months without any maintenance at all, when I suddenly decided to start looking after it. One day, while at Uni I checked the dipstick, and it was right at the bottom of course, so I went and bought a 5 litre tub of basic oil. I asked a friend how much oil to put in a car, and he said "most cars take about 4-5 litres" In it went...it ran very smooth for a while. tbourner
How much is too much? Kwik-fit always fill it up to just over the max line on the dipstick.
hadyn
i wouldnt put kwik fit generic oil in any kind of performance car mate
tbourner
It's Mobil 1 in it. They charge less than I can buy 5 n half litres of Mobil 1 for!!
absz
How much is too much? Kwik-fit always fill it up to just over the max line on the dipstick. MAX LINE means that it should not be filled above that. thats why its there for. pass that on to kwik-fit if you can ps mobil 1 is to thin for the supra. tbourner
Only if you've got leaky seals, which mine hasn't. It's 10 cold viscosity anyway not 0.
supRo
i've accidently overfilled my oil on my tt after topping it up, its well over the full mark and can be seen on the wire of the stick, anything to panic about? If it's very slightly over you should be ok but anything over 100ml = Yes, worry about it. I had a Sierra sapphire once (stop laughing :-)) and put too much oil. The seals around the cam popped, spewing out oil. I think it causes excess pressurisation and I read an article about extra oil splashing about... can't remember the exact reasons that it's bad, anyway start draining some of that oil! CJ
mines been drinking oil since last saturday when i bought it, so im going to see if it continues to eat oil after topping up with 10/40 magnatec Is it smoking at all? Is there any oil showing under the car after parking? Did the garage that sold you the car give you a warranty?
hadyn
its got a 3 month warranty no smoke, no oil under the car - the only smoke is for a minute on cold start up in the morning which is white smoke - which is condensation i presume.... theres no hope that this top up wont be gone by this time next week is there??? :(

hadyn
its not really the overfill thats worrying me, just that my supe has drunk most of its oil in about 500 miles
CJ
Thats the part that would worry me The overfill is a nuisance that can easilt be rectified. Using that much oil would give me a lot of cause for concern.
Fifty
oh shit; yeah just seen your other post. is it on the floor or burning it?

Dash Rendar
If it's consuming oil that rapidly, I'd take it back to where you got it and get them to sort it out. Afterall, it's under warranty...
hadyn
as said above no oil on floor, no signs of burning oil we'll see if it drinks more oil before sending it back from wence it came
