Ankle Arthroscopy (Key Hole Surgery) - Anyone here had it?

Hi all,

Been having a few problems with my ankles over the last 4-6 months. I did a couple of bad sprains (one each ankle) back in mid and late 2006 and whilst I thought they had healed properly, I've been having issues since ramping up my training.

I have had the following done:

  • Special Orthotic Insoles - no/minimal change and benefit
  • Physiotherapy - 6 weeks worth and again no/little benefit
  • MRI Scan - showed no joint damage or other problems, just a diffused Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament both feet (4.5mm thick when should be 2.5mm) consistent with chronic ankle sprains
  • Accupuncture and Cuboid Manipulation - Instant pain relief, but comes back after 4-5 days (only been having this for a week)

Next step by end of March is to have ankle arthroscopy, or at least a 'look' inside the ankle to see if something has been missed and possible ligament repair. I've been told it's a highly successful Op with 95-98% success and takes no more than 6 weeks for full recovery and return to sport.

Has anyone experience this or similar in the ankle joint please? Keen to know more. I have 5 months left before I join the RAF for training so obviously this needs to be sorted now!

Cheers all.

Greg

the psysio is the worst part, takes ages and very hard work, well it was for me on the knee anyway

but about 6 weeks later i was skiing with very little discomfort so should be ok

Thanks guys. Physio should be OK as my ankles are very strong and balance is now good. We'll see. It's a last resort but a likely one if I don't want other problems cropping up again in the future. :)

Too true Greg. Phys is a cow, I didn't pay too much attention and have suffered badly.

Greg, I'd give the physio more time. I'm still doing physio exercises on my knee, 2 years after the problem started!

Speaking of which I've neglected it so far this year, and having read Andy's post, I'm off to catch up :D

Experience counts mate. ;)

My dad shattered his wrist when I was about 16, and he's still having issues with it today. He did intensive physio for about 6 months afterwards and still does daily exercises. He'd come home from physio in complete agony from it too.

My knee isn't quite that bad, but I'm still under 25 (albeit just!) and can't run for more than about 3 mins before it gives me grief. Last summer I had it back to about 15 mins pain-free treadmilling.

Not nice bud. Get a second opinion too btw. There's just no way I'd have Dads patience. Good on him. :)

He's had to have patience as he's self employed so needs to stay active or he can't work.

As for me, I've now seen 3 (might be 4...) different physios in 2 years. The last one I saw for a couple of months at the start of last summer had the least experience (probably about my age compared to two guys with 20+ years experience each) but got to the bottom of the issue straight away. She was also very hot. Maybe my knee was helping so I'd keep going back to see her :D

The thing is the MRI scans and Xrays I've had done show all my joints, bones and ligamtns are in great order and very strong and healthy except the ATFL that keeps 'spraining' for some weird reason and won't reattach and heal properly. Physio really is doing nothing, my physio said I should of seen good results by now. The op is very simple and I'm confident it'll solve the problem. I know a family friend that had it done 8 months back and he's been perfect since.

Strange thing is, my pain is alleviated by exercise!!

Keyhole surgery is great.

Years ago I had a cartilege op which left a 3" scar either side of my knee. :(

About 10 years after that the whole knee siezed up again due to a load of scar tissue fusing to the back of my kneecap.

I was dreading going back in for more scars, but you can hardly see where they went in the second time because the holes are so tiny.

That was over 15 years ago and it's been fine ever since.

For investigative surgery I wouldn't bother - I had it done on my knee 4 months ago, and it's still worse than before. Unless they are actively going in to fix something, be very cautious or you could end up worse off, like me.

Don't think I have any other option mate. Physio hasn't worked, neither has rest, neither has accupuncture long-term. MRI showed minimal damage but may of missed something more serious so looks like this is the only option available really. I would imagine he'll clear out any scar tissue and possible ankle ligament repair. Thanks for the advice though.

How is your knee 'worse' than before mate? Knees are always a complicated one and luckily mine are OK.

Be very careful with it Greg, allow ample time for recovery ! A guy who i had my accident with had major surgery on a compound fracture on his ankle. He tried to get back to work too quickly and caused the injury to not heal properly !

Are you working to any deadlines with the RAF ?

It simply won't flex as far as it used to, so kneeling right down is impossible which is a complete arse-pain when doing stuff at floor level, like plumbing or changing brake pads.

Colin you have no idea how much I'm shittting it mate.

I still need to go back for final physical and medical so doing that end of March BEFORE any operation if needed. That way I can get that over and done with and honestly say No to not having had an operation before.

If I have an Op it won't be until end of March and that would give me 16 weeks before I start Initial Officer Training to recover and get fit. The full recovery time from a repair operation I have been advised is no more than 6 weeks, so should be OK.

I can't even begin to explain how annoying, frustrating and upsetting this is as it could wreck all the hard work and progress I've put in so far :(
