Suggestions, cheapest reliable car possible!

Due to the fact i'll be moving to a different county with virtually no savings and some small debt from the Supra ive decided to sell up and start saving so that i can get deposit money for a flat. Ill be living in Police accommodation for a few months and then onto a house/flat share.

In between owning my last and present supra i had a Ford sierra 1.8. It wasnt that great on fuel but it did me well for a few months and seemed like a reliable work horse! This cost me £100 and when i was done i drove it into a tree and sent it off to the scrappy lol

As im going to be doing alot of motorway travelling i will need something under 1.6 but with reasonable poke (not fast, just nippy) which will return a decent MPG and cheaper tax.

My main concern is reliability. The reason i want to spend as little as possible is so i can use that money to put into a savings account, not fork out on repairs. Therefore something easy to look after would help. Honda or Toyota preferably!

Any ideas or experiences please. I really dont have a clue what would be best.

No sure really. I dont want to spend over 1k for sure because when it comes to selling ill have to wait and wait until someone buys it. I'd rather just have something for around £400 and when im done, ill take it to my parents and leave it on their land until someone buys it or i need it again!

So say £500 ish! Under 1.6, reliable!

Cheers;)

Renault Clio. Missus is looking for one now, it will probably work out cheaper to run a clio as well as the big 4x4 we have than just the 4x4 alone. Tax on the diesel is just £35 and will reportadly do 70mpg. Also, its one of the few small cars I would actually drive, plus they are everywhere so parts should be cheap.

I had a civic for years, ultra reliable but not great on MPG - I had the 1.5vtec E (supposedly for economical) and it didn't do much more than 35mpg.

Sounds interesting but i thought renaults were renowned for breaking down?

I owned a 1.5 vtec civic and you're right, i was look to see over 40mpg!

Not sure about reliability to be honest. I went shopping the other day and counted 15 of them just on the way so they must be doing something right!

My sister bought a Clio brand new from Renault in early 02. It has since failed 4 successive MOTs

Edit: It's never broken down on her or been unreliable, just failed MOTs a lot!
