Guest T.C Posted February 20, 2008 Share Posted February 20, 2008 hello all im 17 turning 18 in just over 2 weeks, im looking to get insured on a non turbo n/a supra , i was originally thinking of getting either a starlet gt or a glanza v , but i have always had a soft spot for supras , in april i ll have a years experience , 1 yrs no claims and will be 18 , how much do you think the insurance will be ? Also before i passed my test i managed to get a quote for a twin turbo supra from performance direct for 8 grand, im hoping the quote i get when i turn 18 wont be anywhere as near as that . thanks for your time, Terryc. Without knowing your exact details to build up an insurance profile for you and without having access to an insurance computer system to run a quote through it's hard to say, prices vary wildly from company to company and person to person, it's best to just ring for quotes yourself and then you'll know exactly how much it's likely to be You could also have a look over the archives here - there are lots of threads like this and the younger members who don't resemble your insurance profile in the slightest usually chirp in with relatively pointless numbers in an attempt to help However in summary I predict your insurance will be expensive. In addition Adrian Flux and Elephant get mentioned a lot. If you wait until you're 18 to get your next policy, it'll make you make a more viable proposition for insuring a Supra at 19 with 2 years ncb. Use the intervening year to get some experience in rear wheel drive, track experience day etc, we've lost 9 in less than a year and a few more losing control but getting away with it. Good luck with your hunt and even more luck is needed for insurance. Worth considering doing your advance motorist. I did mine and it helped bring my premium down. It hurts the bank paying that much on insurance if ive got any advise to younger lads wanting a supra i say wait a couple more years its worth it. even a Manual NA can be unpredictable in the wet i personally have experence driving Powerfull/Fast cars and ive nearly lost it a few times. Just be carefull and consider all your options before get excitied and just buying one nothing worse than spending all that money and losing everything 2-3months later. That leads to my next few questions , how do they handle? and does it take time getting used to how long they are? . I currently drive one of the smallest cars around lol yes thats right a clio . Also kevin, what insurance company are you with ? cheers mate I went from a 1.3L metro to a 3.0L turbo Mk3 Supra, so a bit of a leap, but I had been driving 6 years. They handle very well and I'd think you'd enjoy the cross over period from the Clio to the Supe. I'm sure you'd get your head round the 'bigger car' thing in no time Perhaps though as has been said, for insurance purposes and your experience go for an N/A first. I hope so too mate , the only thing that will worry me is parking. Yeah i agree with you, im not touching a twin turbo until i get abit of experience in a non turbo one first. tbourner Posted February 20, 2008 Share Posted February 20, 2008 I was 21 when I got mine, up from an MG ZR160. I was always told I was a very good driver, even by racing drivers, apparently I was a 'natural'!! I'd driven my dads Sierra Saphire quite a bit too, so I was used to the back end coming out round roundabouts. After about a month in the Supra it bit me, coming off a roundabout in the dry onto a 3 lane stretch that quickly becomes 2 then 1 lane. If anything else had been on the road at the time I'd likely have been in a pretty nasty accident. I corrected it after a few fishtails but it taught me to respect the car. My advice to you is not to get a Supra until you've driven a few RWD cars, just so you know how they work, even an NA (although I've never driven one) I've heard is pretty hairy at times.
