razza
Ill continue training for as long as my body will let me really and apart from having more broken hands and feet than I've had hot dinners I'm in quite good shape really That's the thing with comps unfortunately, it knackers your hands and feet, and as you get older things take longer to heal. I miss fighting in them, but don't miss the damage my body used to take. Wasn't up to the standard you talk about though;) Why not try learning another art, it'll provide a different type of challenge, and also helps keep your interest... Always best to leave on a high and undefeated too I assume you will still do training albeit not at the same intensity, no way after 20 years can you just switch off it
Sparky
Which Karate did you do? I finished at 1nd dan in Go ju Ryu Karate after 10 years as im moving away to Hampshire and theres no clubs round there! Im looking for Shotakan Clubs now as thats the nearest alternative! Were your competitions on a point system? I remember one year at 17 going up against some massive bloke (1st or 2nd dan) and then my sensai told me it was full contact last man standing. ... It hurt alot!

Lbm
Ill continue training for as long as my body will let me really and apart from having more broken hands and feet than I've had hot dinners I'm in quite good shape really. I think this is a good time for you to have to have reached your decsion. 22 years as a successful competion fighter is extremely impressive, in my book. You don't want to be in a position, where if you kept going and going, in a few years you couldn't even pick up a pen to write with etc... Well done fella, enjoy the teaching side etc and very best wishes for the future
hodge
cheers for the positive comments guys, I've had a major downer at work today. Trying to come to terms with the idea, but its pulling me apart. I've always been the fittest and fastest in my club, I think in gona struggle not being the star of the show anymore I'm just too competitive. I suppose its all a part of life you have to move on, but this is BY FAR the hardest thing I've ever done.

I agree with Razza...this may be a very good idea. By all means keep up the Karate, if not the competition, but get intrigued by another art. Tai Chi for eg. As long as the teacher is not crap, it could blow your mind...
