RedM
Luxury carmaker Porsche is to challenge plans to increase London's congestion charge to £25-a-day for some vehicles. The firm said it intended to ask for a judicial review into the price changes, which come into force in October. Full story at BBC News.
Matt H
The congestion charge is simply "poorer" people loose out, "richer" people get to work faster
ivan
Nice to see a big car maker getting involved. Now all we need is a couple of them to tackle fuel taxation.
Bobbeh
Its only cos they have their Cayman SUV coming out and they're likely to lose a lot of business due to lack of sales.
Matt H
P.S i dont know why Prosche are bothering, climate change is number one on priority and how ever they argue the case it will go ahead as TfL want
Gaz Walker
climate change is number one on priority For who? I don't give a toss what the supposed scientists say. Its just a cycle, I am sure it'll be OK
garethr
The climate is always changing. Ten thousand years ago there was a mile of ice covering most of the UK, two thousand years ago the Romans were cultivating vines, and 150 years ago Londoners were skating on the Thames. The issue is whether it's all our fault, which seems to be looking more and more doubtful, and if Ken and Gordon are doing anything except using it as an excuse to create new tax opportunities. Every Porsche bar the Cayman & Boxster 2.7 manuals are in bandG. Porsche do a lot of business in London so it makes good business sense. Hopefuly they will crush that commie scum. Angarak
Well considering that owners of big engined cars already pay more road tax (supposedly due to carbon emissions) and pass their MOTs which incorporates an emissions test with limits set by VOSA (governing body) how can Ken Livingstone justify charging an emissions tax between 7am-7pm (or whatever non 24/7 time restriction is in place)? Matt H
For who? I don't give a toss what the supposed scientists say. Its just a cycle, I am sure it'll be OK For the EU Under the EU Britain has to reduce CO2 emissions by half (i think), the only other country with higher targets is Norway. See below The climate is always changing. None of the past civilisations were burning fossil fuels at a rate of Knots like we are doing, and with China on the go CO2 is getting a real problem.. CO2 is a green house gass which means that it acts like an insulator to the planet, keeping heat in, meaning temps around the world will increase... meaning disastor. It really hasnt got anything to do with Congestion charging though, thats jsut a front for getting more money out. Congestion charging is supposed to reduce car traffic, it wasnt devised with CO2 emissions in mind, but that doesnt matter because they can still use it as leverage. I see where Porsche are coming from, chargeing cars at different rates isnt going to effect congestion, a car in London is still a car in London regardless of how much CO2 it pumps out, but TfL will just blow all that out with Climate change arguements
Gazboy
Maybe with all the profits Porsche make, they can pay the 25£ extra people are going to have to pay They certainly could, but why should they? How does charging a 911 £25 reduce the congestion when a Prius occupies just as much space? It's not a eco tax, it's an envy tax.
Bobbeh
Hehe I was just having a laugh The congestion argument is to deter people from coming into town thus limiting the amount of cars, regardless of what it is, but they'd prefer to have the likes of a Prius (Kens car ) than the 911. I'd just like them to tax the school run generally, half term traffic is heaven!
uzthedentist
apparently what ken is doing is illegal hence the challenge. he is allowed to place a flat rate CHARGE for entering the capital the same way as councils can charge for parking. however if he discriminates on co2 emissions then this is a pollution TAX and hes not allowed to set taxes only local and national government are allowed to set tax
Gazboy
He is also not allowed to use tax to pay for public transport. As mentioned elsewhere the legality is somewhat shakey which is why he hasn't taken the embassies to court over their unpaid fines. Embassies doesn't look right.
