Alex
Toshiba have finally thrown in the towel and admitted defeat. Those with HD-DVD players backed the wrong horse http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7252172.stm BlueRay the technically superiour and more consumer friendly format has won
RiceRocket
At last Now bring on the Blu-Ray recorders
Alex
At last Now bring on the Blu-Ray recorders You can get BD recorders for the PC already...that was HD-DVD's biggest drawback IMO...no burners for the PC market that loves big storage
ShamelessTT
What a stupid name Blu-Ray is tho, HD-DVD is much better sounding. Im glad i didnt buy one and waited now......
Thorin
BlueRay the technically superiour and more consumer friendly format has won Also the more expensive and DRM restricted though unfortunately.
Multics
Yeah, seems like Toshiba is going to pull the plug soon.
MARTIN R
Good news for the consumer as at least BluRay should be around for sometime to come
Alex
ShamelessIt's a blue laser...blue light rays....errr I'm struggling to find the issue...HD-DVD has too many D's!
Marco
That's good news I suppose. I don't have any of those players atm, but would have been a shame if I had got a HD-DVD player already. Blue ray discs can store more data, and that's what it's all about in the end.
ivan
The bad news is that the winner is Sony. Sony=pricey + DRM.

Ark
Can't see the benefit personally. I'll stick with perfectly good DVD thanks, especially as most supposedly high-definition films are still encoded to MPEG2.
marc_p
Woo hoo for PS3 owners, gutting for xbox 360 owners.
captainchaos
dont bother me I collect DVD's and have around 500 films I'll be fooked if i run out to replace them all with Blu-ray
Bobbeh
I wonder if microsoft had got their thumb out of their ass and released an HD DVD player sooner for the X-Box it might have been a different story. Kinda new this has been on the cards for a while now. With Toshiba pulling out of the tech they invented its all over. Again, glad I got the PS3 captainchaos - You can still play DVDs on a Blu Ray system.
JustGav
The ironic thing is I'm not 100% sure whether it helps the consumer or not really... Majority of stuff is heading to on demand, the writers strike happened because the industry was moving online. I reckon consumer will continue to have this split format till eventually it is not used. A lot of new high end players have got network connectivity. I was much the same to be honest, but after having watched a few hd series and movies, there is something to be said for the quality... Remember HD DVD and Bluray are just mediums not the content. Pete
It's quite amazing given the size of the companies that were backing HD: Universal Studios Paramount Pictures DreamWorks Animation Intel Microsoft HP I'm glad Sony won, I think they needed to as well. tbourner
I think in future most stuff will be online, TVs will connect to your broadband wireless link and you can watch whatever you want at any time!! The price of broadband will probably go up and there'll be bandings depending on your download limit you choose. This would be a good way to go I think, it'd stop all the crap about piracy because if everyone pays for their download limit they can then download whatever programme/film they want! You could have pay as you go or contract TV as well!!! Assuming the quality was there DVDs would probably get sold less and less, don't know if this is a good thing or not. carl0s
Sony's proprietary technologies never win! When will they learn. Time will tell for sure. Minidisc ? Memorystick and all it's retarded incompatible "other memorysticks Pro/duo/whatever" Betamax erm.. there are more annoying Sonyisms.. lemme think.. A[A-Z][A-Z] audio file format. etc.
carl0s
Although having read the article, it's sounding like we may have Blu-Ray in the home soon

Must be something wrong with your setup then, as the stuff I've seen is very impressive. But as you bought into HD-DVD I can understand why its not so good as from today.
