Help - Stuck window

JamesC

Recommended Posts

When i was at work this afternoon my window got stuck down. The motor moves the cable slightly but then it's seems as if the wires have got tangled and it's stopping it from moving it further.

Before i started i did a quick search and noticed some people said that they have replaced the cables using brake wire etc, but how do you get into the mechanism? The wires (from what i can see) look alright so i was hoping to just take it apart sort the cables out and re-assemble. Does anyone have any ideas, here are some pics from where i am up to at the minute:

You can see the wires dont look normal inside... or do they? Help!!

James, it looks fubar'ed. The white cable reel pulls out of the housing easy enough, do this and you should be able to suss whether the cables snapped or not (looks like it though).

I've not done the bike cable trick myself, but I have replaced the mech which is fairly straightforward. Maybe Jezz can salvage one for you, or its £70 odd quid from Toyota.

Yep well it's knakered :(

I've just held it up on wood for now until i decide what to do.

Can you buy the rail without the motor from Toyota? Any idea on how much they charge for fitting too? I was going to put it in for an engine & gearbox oil change next week so if its not too much :eyebrows:

I'll probably end up doing it myself though so anyone got any tips on how to do it? How do you disconnect it from the "thing" that holds it onto the window? Also, where does the bottom one go to? I couldn't even see.

Thanks chaps.

You can buy the winder mech on its own (the only way to buy the cable is to buy the mechanism) from Toyota...its around the £70 mark. Again, you could try a scrapper.

Theres some recent posts about how to replace the mech...I'll have a look see if I can find them...its not too difficult, just remove the old mechanism, replace with new mechanism. The fiddly bits are holding the glass up out of the way to get the old mech out, and adjusting the window to seal properly when you are all bolted back up.

I replaced the cables on mine, but you have to be able to make them to a specific length and fit terminations on the end.

I got my brother to turn me some terminations on his lathe which I secured with small grub screws.

There's an adjuster on the bottom of the door which will pull in or push out the window mechanism, this moves the top of the window to give you a good seal against the rubber. - it's easy to overlook this feature when putting it back together.

Ewen, that second link doesn't work mate ;)

Yes, and I know why:innocent:

Spud-features here tried to link to an entire page of search results...

Search for 'drivers window mechanism' and you will get the threads I was naively trying to link to.
