Pixelfill
There are a number of "region free" blu-ray discs available. but in general they are region encoded - down to 3 regions now. Mike

AdzC
PS3s also upscale ordinary DVDs to a higher resolution. Just amend the settings on the cross media bar.
Supra-Brett
PS3s also upscale ordinary DVDs to a higher resolution. Just amend the settings on the cross media bar. most HD TVs upscale a SD picture anyway, so the only differnece is between the quality of the upscaler in the TV or in the PS3. Whitesupraboy2
When the PS3 is hacked and custom firmware is created I suspect some clever soul may make it support both if the laser will read it.
Bobbeh
HD-DVD is dying out as no one is supporting the technology, so as long as you have a PS3 you'll be ok. Like Pixelfill says there are loads of region free Blu Ray movies.. its probably about 50/50 atm.

Heard somewhere even MS were thinking of using BR in the xbox... due to the capacity of BR over HD, or something like that? Like Pixelfill says there are loads of region free Blu Ray movies.. its probably about 50/50 atm. most of the big names (production companies) seem to be backing the blu-ray format. Its still earlier, but blu-ray is a newer technology and I believe is the way to go... I went out and bought a 42" 1080p lcd and a ps3 and love it, its stunning next is the amp and speakers, so everything is done.
Bobbeh
You just have to look at the US, which is where it matters for the media, Blockbuster wont be stocking HD DVD at all, like you said, there are only 2 film studios still supporting it, where as the other 80% have left and are Blu Ray only, Best Buy (US equivilent of Currys) will be encouraging consumers to buy Blu Ray over HD-DVD and already Blu Ray sales are outselling HD-DVD. To me the only sad thing about HD-DVD not being around is the fact that it is a region free technology and the players are cheaper. But as I got a Blu Ray DVD with the PS3 the 2nd point isnt important to me
charlton
Does the PS3 play music files? (mp3 & wma)
Bobbeh
Yes (not sure about WMA tho). The new firmware upgrade allows it to play Divx movies too now. Edit, just read it supports the following music types: Memory Stick Audio Format(ATRAC) MP3(MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3) MP4(MPEG-4 AAC) WAVE(Linear PCM) WMA
charlton
Awesome, that will save me getting a new computer as well, I guess you can store pics on there too
Bobbeh
Yeah. The best thing to do is to have a PC, and set it up as a media server, then you point the PS3 to it so you can watch all your movies/mp3s from the PC Saves you filling the PS3 HD with your files then. Dr_Doom
Looks like Blu-ray have pretty much won the battle according to this.... http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/16/toshiba-pulling-the-plug-on-hd-dvd-already/ http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/15/wal-mart-to-officially-discontinue-hd-dvd-sales-by-june/

Scott
That price is insane. You can build your own mediacenter with a multiformat drive in it for around £600 and have all the added features of a mediacenter along with blu-ray writing capabilities. How do company's get away with prices like that! Scott =op

Dr_Doom
Once HD-DVD is phased out, Blu-ray prices should start to drop.. Remember how much DVD's were when they first came out? I'd just buy a player that'll accept both formats What's the point in that? How many people bought Video recorders that played both VHS and Betamax???
