Small-ish Diesel car for under £1500!

We need a daily driver.

-Must be diesel.

-Must be reliable.

-Must have power steering.

-Something of comparable size to a Golf, A3, Pug 306 (although Golfs and A3s are priced too high) and no bigger than an Astra.

-Ideally engine size would be 1.8 to 2.0l tdi

-Not too bothered about colour or mileage.

-Plenty of time to run on the tax and MOT would be nice.

Anyone have anything like this that you're selling or maybe you have one that you might want to sell now.

I'm having a right old 'mare trying to find one via AutoTrader. I just get the feeling that they are cheap for a reason.

I'd just like to stress that I don't need advice on what car to buy or how your car is doing. I'm looking for actual sellers or people who hadn't thought of selling but might now. Thank you.

And if you get a pug 306 Td I have a set of high flow injector nozzles & inlet manifold (to fit a FMIC) going cheap if you want them ;)

Should get a decent one for under £1k with approx 70K miles around a P plate

306 HDI or DTurbo as I said in PM - a bit of tuning potential if you so desire, economy and a good chassis.

If you want something readily available then the Astra is probably an option but most seem to be higher mileage. If driving pleasure is far from your highest priority you might be able to get a higher mileage Octavia SDI, probably ex taxi but comfy and lots of room, you can make a bit of money on a weekend if you hang around outside the nightclubs ;)

I have a '99 106 diesel coming next month, low miles, 60mpg and so on but it's small and flimsy, I'm hoping to to swap it for a 306 diesel later or a Fabia vRS if my finances allow it.

As this is a financial move rather than one for pleasure it might also be worth browsing http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk to explore which cars are able to run on veg oil to reduce running costs even more.

306 TD will run on veg oil. Hdi will not as it is high pressure common rail.

I had a 306 XRDt for a year and it was a hoot to drive :) Uprated the brakes with brembo discs, redstuff pads & aeroquip hoses. Stuck some Yoko tyres on it and it handled REALLY well for a stock saloon.

If you don't worry about handling then a Citroen ZX Td is the same car but cheaper. Doesn't quite stick to the road the same as the 306 though for some reason?

I have been running a 406 1.9TD on 40% Veggy with no problems - lots on info if someone wants to give it a try.

HDi engines are also not as well loved by the Pug community, as they can be problematic as they age from what I've heard. The old Bosch Injection Pump 1.9 TD is a good, reliable lump and Pugs look and go well.

ETA: The website Michael mentions is well worth a look - very, very informative and useful.

Too much and, besides, isn't Leven right up past Edinburgh?

That one above it though. Faulty central locking. If it was just the fob then you'd think the seller would sort it and get a better price. I reckon there's more to that one than meets the eye.

Am I asking too much to want a sub £1500 car with no faults?

I've emailed the Meridian chappy but Beverley would be a 'mare to get to without a car. Basically the best part of a day plus travel costs just to look!

I could give you a lift if you gave me a couple of days notice. I am meant to rep over your way but I can never be arsed with the M62, traffic and Yorkshire people!!:p

Let me know. Genuine offer!!;)

I feel like that about the Yorkshire people too. :eyebrows:

Thank though. I'll wait to see if it's still for sale then make some kind of plan.
