Dash Rendar
Howdy all Over the last few days, my Supe seems to be having trouble starting. Up until a few days ago, it always started first time and would always catch almost immediately. But just lately, two things seem to be happening... 1) I turn the key and it turns over once or twice and then seems to die. The power is still on but the car won't turn over. If I turn the key all the way off and then on again, the process repeats. I have to do this a few times until it catches. 2) It's having trouble catching. Sometimes it starts but then dies a few seconds later... like it's not quite getting enough juice or something. Could these be related since they both seem to have started at the same time? I didn't think it was battery since I'm not getting the 'ticking' thing.
Jake
It's almost certainly the battery.
Stevie Boy
If the cars actually starting then dies a few seconds later, i'm not so sure its the battery IMO. But if the car runs fine when you get her goin i'm thinking that may eliminate say the fuel pump. You might have an air leak, split pipe of some form, this may give you jip starting from cold but may hide itself once the car is running/warmed up and closed loop system compensates for the fault. Any abnormal hissing noises when driving? (other than the ones usuallly present on a MKIV) Other possibilites are you have an electrical fault, bit vague i know but guess you need some form of diagnosis carried out. Stevie Boy
Can you define the "catching"? Do you feel the starter motor is engaging with the ring gear/engine and turning the engine over at a decent rate at which it would normally start? Dash Rendar
Thanks for all your thoughts guys. Can you define the "catching"? Do you feel the starter motor is engaging with the ring gear/engine and turning the engine over at a decent rate at which it would normally start? By catching, I mean when the car starts, at which time you can let go of the key. As to the second question: yes, I think. I think I do need some diagnosis. Actually, I haven't had the car long and it would give me some peace of mind to have it looked at by someone who actually knows Supras. I did take the car to my regular garage (where I used to take my old car). They're very helpful and extremely cheap with any work I have done, but I'm not confident in their ability to work with this motor. It's been modded a bit and I know they don't really understand what's going on under the hood. Can you guys recommend somewhere closeby I could take the car to have it checked out? I live in Reading. Stevie Boy
Not sure who's the closest to you in Reading, defo recommend getting someone with Supra experience to work on it though. Probly save yourself a fortune in diagnosis time if someone who knows them well. I'm thinking your mods are in part responsible to whatever your prob is, most cars are reliable untill the tinkering begins. What sort of mods we talking here your Supe? You say you haven't had it long, has it had a decent service recently? Things like Spark plugs etc get overlooked some owners that dont care bout their cars much, too busy getting involved with turbo timers and tricks to go faster and the general maintenance, of which intervals should really be shortened on an extensively modded car, gets put off. I know Paul Whiffin from http://www.whifbitz.co.uk has get a new workshop just recently opened, he's North London though. Theres some Supe specialist West London direction Jem i think, or a Guy called Usmann who seems to know his Supes, oh yes and not forgetting the guys from Vortex who are well into there Supra's too, not sure where there based though, check out the traders links and give em a call. MichaelG
Someone on here recently had problems similar and it was the Crank Sensor. I would also suggest checking out the fuel pump though as it could be this. I had a fuel pump go on my evo 5 and it gradually had these symptoms until it wouldnt start at all. Dash Rendar
Cheers Michael. Yes, I read that thread about the crank sensor. And, as for the fuel pump... even though I really know very little about motors, I somehow instinctively feel this is what the problem is. (I'm using the Force.) It's the fuel pump that makes a humming noise when you turn the key, right? Thanks for the info Stevie. I did have it serviced recently, but I don't know if it was "decent". What sort of mods we talking here your Supe? HKS Induction, HKS SSBOV, Spats strut bar, bleeder valve, Neuspec low-restriction pipe (single decat), superchipped, turbo timer, boost gauge. I'm told it dyno'd at 420bhp, but I have no evidence to support this. If you want to see it, check out this page. I might try and chat to a few local Reading boys and see where they take their Supes to (like Gav).
