Shane
Can anyone help?? My son's 96 STI has thrown up fault code 22. This apparently is the knock sensor (No. 1 we think as it has 2). When the car has stood for a few days it seems to hesitate under WOT and the engine management light comes up. Once you cover 15-20 miles the hesitation stops and the light goes out and it runs well, but it does store code 22. Apart from selling it and buying a supra, any suggestions. Cheers. Guest civicsam
replace the knock sensor! they are a common fault on those bags of poo! i work on enough of them! you gotta take off the intercooler and its on the top of the block with a 12mm bolt through it. dont overtighten it though! david hendry cars can get you a good price on one. Shane
We took the sensor from the written off WRX we have parked up waiting for the insurers to collect and it seems to have cured the problem. Although, the one from the STI was cracked all over and we noticed that the one from the WRX has started to crack in all the same places so guess it's only a matter of time before we need to get a new one. Thanks for your help.

Guest civicsam
sounds very much like it, what type of scoob is your mates? sti, wrx, uk wrx? some have idividual coils and some have one coil unit with ht leads! is it only at 4k? does it hesitate say from 2-4 under load and does it have bad idle if so more likely air flow meter. bignum
Its a uk wrx, tickover ir perfect, only hesitates at 4k but its more like a missfire i think.
stealth
Could be any number of things..... A failing MAF can give the backfire effect, this should be sorted ASAP as this can result in engine failure!! At 4K I think the car has come on full chat hasn't it ?! Does your mate have a boost gauge? What happens to the boost when the misfire happens ?! Could be a shot spark plug! The coilpack on the early cars are mounted directly ontop of the spark plugs, well on the sides)
