Steve Cargill
Looking through the archives the NGK BKR7E seems to be the plug of choice for running higher boost. Is this still the preferred choice? What should they be gapped to, J spec up to 18PSI? How long should they last (or how often should I replace them)?
Alex
.8 and 20,000 miles max. Probably best to change every 10,000.
Steve Cargill
Thanks Alex, I'm off shopping tonight and should be up to full boost by Sunday :)
Steve W
Cooler - or - Platinum ? I just 'looked up' the NGK plug for the Soop and they list a BKR6EP-11 which is a Platinum-tipped with a pre-gapped 1.1mm. I know the BKR7E is 1 heat range cooler, but, is that better than running the recommended Platinum-type ? ? [ I DID check to see if they did a BKR7EP-11 - but they don't ] I presume, once tuned, we need the cooler plug ? ? Steve.
eyefi
yep, need the colder plug for above stock boost. mine ran fine on the stock plats for a few days, i wouldnt recommend it in the long run. the plat plugs offer a longer life over the copper bkr7e, but dont hold up too well to the increased chamber temps. an iridium version is available (longer life and colder) if u want to keep using those precious metals. Steve Cargill
I didn't manage to get any plugs locally, but what I have found is there is a BKR7E-11, pre-gapped to 1.1mm and the BKR7E, which is gapped to 35thou (not sure what that is in metric, but 1.1 is 42 thou) Apparently getting the electrode angles are different on them! Any comments? I've found an MX-5 place selling the -11's for 1.87 each with about 1.50 delivery on top. That seems a pretty good price. Steve W
Cheers Matey.... (SORRY....mateyS, always too late with reply !) I'll get a few of them ready at once ! ! ! [ for 'fiddlings' yet to come ! ] Steve.
eyefi
any motor factors should b able to get them. my local place ordered at 4pm and i picked them up the next day at 10am. the bkr7e is pre gapped to what u want them to b. i would nt get the 11's pesonally, as i didnt want to be gapping them myself. if u end up damaging or weakening the arm thingy, things could get a little expensive
Guest Nick Harris
quote>the bkr7e is pre gapped to what u want them to b. Are you sure?, mine never have! they have always been 1.0mm.
Steve W
with NGK's IF there is a numeral after the '-' then they are Pre-Gapped ie. the BKR6EP-11's are gapped ay 1.1mm otherwise they are NOT pre-gapped. for some cars a BPR6ES might have a gap of 0.8mm others might need 1.0mm the gap IS specified in the NGK catalogue As I said, they list the BKR6EP-11 as the 'right'/std plug for the Soop and that is 1.1mm. However, the gap is only 'best'/'normal' condition. ! !
Guest Nick Harris
Whenever i have checked them, the gap has in at least half those bought has been less than specified.
eyefi
all mine have arrived gapped to the same .030 (or .035) i cant remember which now. mkiv.com lists them as pregapped as well.
Steve W
0.03" is roughly 0.8mm which tends to be about the most common gap, so that would be 'pre-gapped' even though they don't guarantee the 'unspecified ' ones (ie. the BKR7E's).
