Miguel
Right wonder if any of you guys can help a computer Gimp with this. After instaling XP as an upgrade from ME I have now lost all my important mails and contacts in Outlook express. Is there any way I can get these back or are they now gone forever..Please be gentle.....computers are not my thing
Soonto_HAS_soop
Do a search for *.pst to see if you can find an outlook post file. If you can, you should be able to import it into the new outlook, through the file menu then import. HTH If you have no *.pst on your system, then you will have probably lost them. Soonto_HAS_soop
Open outlook, goto file, then import and follow the instructions, highlighting the Outlook.pst file you have found.
JustGav
I've got a fancy little recovery tool which finds files that have been obliterated by the system, if you want to have a go with it, let me know... Saved my ass a few times... Gav
Duffers
Mig, do a search for *.dbx files, as Outlook Express saves it's messages as *.dbx files. The normal location for these files is within the user's profile so hopefully they might still be there. If you find some (this MUST be the original ones - not the new ones OLE has just created - check time stamps) and copy them (and the folder they are in) to C:\ so you know where they are. You'll know youv'e found the original files as if you had folders in your old installation - you'll see the *.dbx files associated with your old folders. Then, create a folder on the root of the C: called OLE. Then, you'll need to load Outlook Express and select "Tools" - "Options" and "Maintenance" from the tabs. Click "Store Folder" and then click "Change". Search thru the file system and select the C:\OLE folder you just created. Click "Ok", then "Ok" again and then "Ok" again to take you back to the main Outlook screen. Now, close Outlook Expresss completely. Go to the location that you copied your original files (a folder in C:\) and COPY the entire contents of the folder to the C:\OLE folder - you'll be asked about overwritting a few files - let it overwrite them. Make sure you are not hiding system files to make sure you grab ALL the files from the folder and are not missing hidden files! Now, I don't 'think' the account details are stored in the Outlook Express data folder - I think they are held in the registry. So, you'll have to create a new mail account with your username / password / smtp / pop settings etc. Next time you load Outlook Express, your old data should now be there as it was before. I'd then grab a copy of OLE backup (PM me for it) as this backs up your OLE into a .EXE file that is dead easy to restore if you lose your mail again. You might want to have a search for *.pab and *.wab to see if you exported your address book at some point before the upgrade. Hope this helps! Good luck!
