Guest Ecossesupra
Hello all, Any suggestions what to do about a bizzare pinging sound my 93n/a is making, after a bit of research can see it may be a result of detonation but aint got no turbos?!?! mores the pity. Could it be a duff knock sensor, plugs etc. My car is a jap import, 40k on the clock, looks like it has a full jap service history. Any help would be greatly appreciated. MichaelG
Give us a bit more info mate, how frequent / loud is it and where does it seem to be coming from ? Is it on accelaration / cornering / slowing down / in all gears or just some ? Michael
geoffvalenti
It doesn't need turbos to knock, just the increase in cylinder pressures and hotter intake charge makes it more likely on forced induction engines.
Guest Ecossesupra
The noise is only on acceleration, sounds a bit like a ballbearing in a can, if that makes any sense?? K
geoffvalenti
Don't tell me, it only does it on fairly wide throttle openings in a high gear, where you maybe should have changed down Have you checked the ignition timing? I'm not sure whether its adjustable on the N/A (it isn't on the TT) What fuel are you running on, Optimax/super unleaded, std unleaded or paraffin
Guest Ecossesupra
I run it on vodka lol, I have tried optimax etc makes b*gger all difference, not sure about timing got a feeling I cant adjust it though. If I drive real slow I cant here it, but as I accelerate a bit harder it becomes more noticable. ping ping ping ping pong ping! K
tbourner
Frequency increases with engine revs?
geoffvalenti
Yeah, is it a random knocking or rhythmic?
Guest Ecossesupra
Not random it is always the same noise, just more audible at higher revs ie 3000rpm+
geoffvalenti
so it increases linearly with engine revs?
tbourner
The frequency or the volume increase at higher revs? i.e.: ping.......... ping.......... ping........ ping.... ping... ping.. ping. ping pingpingpingping OR: ping... ping... ping... PING... PING... PING... PING...
absz
sounds like ignition timing ? the first thing you should do is remove the distributor cap and give it a good clean. also check if its not damp in there and no signs of cracks in cap. Guest Ecossesupra
Ok will try the cap thing and get it serviced see if that eliminates the problem. Thanks for your help guys
richardharmon
Sounds like the ignition timing might be out to me (too advanced). While you’re checking the distributor cap, check that the whole distributor has not come loose, make sure you can’t rotate the whole distributor assembly by hand. I would definitely get the timing checked as a first step as this is very easy to do and shouldn’t cost too much if you have to take it somewhere to get it done. Does anybody know if the NA uses a vacuum advance? Either way the mechanism that advances the timing at higher revs might be at fault, if pinking is occurring then I would suspect too much advance, check all the hoses that go anywhere near the distributor for leaks too. Best of luck.
Guest Ecossesupra
Thanks for that mate, will check all these things, I appreciate your help as I am used to working on sixities american cars which are a bit less technically advanced...... The car is due a service so will get them to check out the timing at the same time, it does sound like a timing thing. Cheers Keith
