SVA question: US imports vs JDM!

I'm sure the answer is really obvious but how is it that US cars can be imported, SVA'ed and sold in the UK without having to wait 10 years like the JDM Supras, Skylines etc?

I'm seriously thinking of taking advantage of the exchange rate to get myself a Corvette while the rate is still good. It might mean beans on toast for a bit though.

I thought you could import any car that had a model report and if it didn't have one you could commission one. I believe it is also possible to sell that report, though more than likey you would get a reduced fee from a specialist company to do it for you - they would then keep/sell the report.

That was my understanding when I was looking at JDMs anyway, I guess USDM is the same.

On a side note, if I was going to get a USDM LHD it would have to be a mustang - seen 06 models in this country for 16k! Very tempted when I was looking for a new car but went for a JDM 350z in the end.

It won't take v long to overtake :) easier to park on the left? no doors getting knocked off by passing traffic? toll booths could be a pain though. If i had the money i would exactly what your pondering on Red

Corvettes - I love em! The only car out there that has a better rear end than the Supra :)

They're really cheap too. I bought my first silver TT off a trader in Nottingham who specialised in importing Corvettes and Dodge Ram pickups. He'd took my Supra in Part Ex against a Corvette.

I don't know which model you're looking at Martin but you can get the newer shape one on an R reg already here for around 13k.

Not been able to see properly to overtake is fun? lol

Ah thats easy what you do is wait for the car behind you to pull out and overtake then blast out behind him and overtake him back again when he pulls in front of the vehicle you wanted to overtake. Thats how I did it in Europe when I was on the wrong side of the car to see whats coming in an area with a million and one tractors. The car park/ drive through/ passport control etc etc thing is a real pain though.

For that sort of money, you would likely be looking at a high mileage auto C5 without HUD, not the newer model (C6). Later C5's, especially the more desirable models command a higher price and as with any import there are a lot around with suspect history.

I looked at importing when I got mine, but found exactly what I was after for similar money and a lot less hassle in the UK.

It is frustrating when you see what they go for in the US, but once the government has had their pound of flesh the prices aren't so appealing.

lhd vehicles dont need model reports.

Any reason for that Jurgen?

Because LHD cars have to go through the Single Vehicle Approval test, while RHD cars have to go through the Enhanced Single Vehicle Approval test.

As to why that's the case? No idea, probably the influence of the car manufacturers, although I'm sure the government have some spurious safety/emissions justification for it.
