mathew
just over a year ago i came off the tools as a bricklayer and into a managerial position which i felt great about. they had explained that the first job i would be given would be a sorta testing ground to see how i cope. i would also stay on the same hourly rate which i didnt mind as they were offering me an orportunity. luckily for me i had a decent project manager who was more than happy to throw in a few extra hours each day. so a year down the line (now) im still in the same position but on a different site. recently had an appraisal and discovered i was better off staying hourly paid which i chose to do. but on the site im on now im not seeing any benefits (extra hours thrown in etc)from my added responsiblities, pressure, overtime etc etc. also i no longer have a company van so have to use the supra each day which they cant cover the fuel costs for!. there are 2 other guys in the same role as me but they are on £2.50 an hour more + company van. ok they are older but im doing just a good a job as either. this whole scenario has really got me down the last few weeks and ive been dropping a few hints but tomorrow ive decided im gona speak to the contracts manager personally. the problem is is that i have no idea how to go about it and usually when i wanna get something off my chest i end up speaking without thinking and saying the completely wrong things. any tips on how i can go about this? sorry for the long rant/moan/whinge

Marco
I suppose it's a bad thing to bring up non-work related things. Don't mention the expensive petrol costs from the supra, but mention things like you've doing a great job etc...

mathew
If it's that big then I'd consider another job!! the company i work for is one of the largest construction firms in europe yet they seem to be some of the worse payers. ive lost count the amount of people who have left for more money over the last few years (some being offered up to £10k more!). if they agree to what i want then great il be more than happy. i dont like the idea of moving companies as ive been with these for 10 years now and feel quite at home........sometimes

marbleapple
Arrange a meeting and explain to him what you have just told us Just don't tell then that you used to charge extra hours because that might not impress them. It is technically fraud afterall.
jaymdee
Years ago (10 perhaps) I was in the same position. I had a degree and the company took me on at a low wage, which was OK as I'd been out of work for 4 months, to see how I got on. A year later I was promoted and given a £4k pay rise, but was still being paid £4k less than guys 20 years older than me that I was giving work to. I spoke to my boss and was told "we only pay that sort of money to older guys who have families etc and you don't need the money". I said that was discrimination and he had no choice but to agree. A week later I got a £3k pay rise and the next month another £2k Be polite and explain the situation. Don't take any crap either as most people respect you if you tell it how it is. Sometimes it's good to show that you value yourself hiighly (but don't overdo it!!)

It is technically fraud afterall. i didnt charge extra hours. the contracts manager on that contract was booking them in for me as an incentive i.e ''work a 12 hour shift and il book you in for 15''
mathew
anyway i made the phone call today to the senior project manager (mark) on the site im on at the mo. he seemed a bit worried when i said i need to talk about a few issues. went over to meet him at 10.30am and explained things how they were and he turned around and said ''oh i thought you made the change over to salary anyway'' i mentioned everything i had said in my first post and he could clearly see where i was coming from. as he cant do much about it he did see he will have a chat with the regional director whos down on monday and i also will have a chat with him. a big shout out to Marco for that link on the previous page. i used some of their tips and Mark had a sorta 'bloody hell youve done your research' look on his face.so thanks for that Marco. so just gotta wait until monday now and cross my fingers:)

jaymdee
What sort of discrimination is it?? Age. Being told that I couldn't be paid as much as other people because I was younger and 'didn't need the money'. Nothing to do with experience or the type of job I was doing. I was in charge of giving these people work to do on a daily basis.
