tbourner
I've actually reversed the IDE cable round completely so that I could have a slighly longer ribbon between the two drives and in a lot of cases - the IDE bus doesn't like you doing this and will pi$$ you around when trying to detect both drives on the bus. I thought that was only with floppy drives, with the twisted/untwisted cable problems?
Duffers
Oh, the dreaded floppy cable, yes! Maybe it's just Dell GX-110's that do that then - it really did pi$$ me around when the IDE cable was reversed. THEN, I noticed that one end of the IDE cable had the word "Controller" printed on it in tiny tiny tiny print. I swapped it back and it worked fine. I'm sure I've done this before on other systems and it's been fine but my Daughter's Dell was having none of it. I just thought it might be something to try... Grazer
Tried swapping cables round - no change. The plot thickens!! Thanks for the CD Jake Installed XP on the 120GB drive as single/master (although BIOS still does not recognise it - when I try to auto detect it crashes). XP runs fine until I plug in a USB device when it freezes. This is a problem as my cable modem is USB (as well as everything else). I've had to put the other HD back in to get online - so help needed so I can stop swapping these drives round!!
Whitesupraboy2
Well it's been a while since I used 98 but I'm pretty confident . . . . Your right they are, i got one at work. It may crash on auto detect if your motherboard doesnt support up to that size of hard disk. What motherboard is it?
Grazer
Apparently it's a Saturn board (it's an NEC PC). I've got my BIOS ID but can't work out how to get a flash upgrade from that.
