Hi All.

I presently drive a company car which I am returning in August. I am looking to buy a car either new or 2nd hand and am willing to spend around £10,000 (maybe higher if I want a particular car but would prefer less if poss).

I have no idea what to get so I just thought I’d get ideas from you guys.

  • Will be an everyday run around (did 9k miles last year) + needs to be able to take a 3rd passenger every so often.
  • Planning to buy a house this year so would prefer to keep maintenance costs low
  • Ability to ‘improve’/mod it once funds become available
  • Would ideally like it to beat a R32 Golf

I had thought of the following:

  • Skyline (no idea which version)
  • Impreza (no idea which version)
  • Evo (no idea which version)
  • VXR Astra
  • VXR Corsa
  • R32 Golf
  • Supra (concerned about running costs + only 2 1/2 seats)

If you guys had my budget what car would you get? It need not be one on my list... I welcome suggestions.

'VXR Astra' - Don't think you can pick these up for 10k yet can you? i thought they were still quite pricey?...

Personally, if it wasn't a supra, i'd spend a tiny bit more and get a tidy Skyline R33 GTR ;) :D

Well I'd go up to 14k for a very new 2nd hand car. Just don't want to pay that price for a 10 year old car (if that makes sense).

id take the r33. the evo and scooby probably need servicing every 500 miles. the vauxhauls will break the r32 golf looks a really uncomfortable drive for every day. And well a supra isnt hugely practicle :) although i drive mine every day and its fine

Yeah, I almost got an Evo 8 as a company car till I saw the service schedule on it, 3000 odd I think it was, I worked out that it would be in the garage at least once a month..

I get you ;)

What about this? there are lots to choose from but this one looks tidy & unmolested :)

You might even have a bit of money left over to add your own touch :)

I think the R33 must certainly up for consideration. Only problem with the one you show is that it is local to me (and all the companies local are dodgy individuals). Keighley motors etc are local too

Another option... Jag Stype? It would be comfy... bit old schoolish though. (I'm not 100% sure what the service cost / reliability is like)

Seem cheap as well, just a quick look on autotrader... 10k gets you around a 2003-2005 +-50000 mile car...

Thanks for looking.

Like the S Types but Clare’s dad has one of those and I’m maybe wanting something a bit more aggressive in appearance.

BMW 330d? Not sure what they go for 2nd hand?

Some really nice 330's... according to the new 330d 0-60 in 6.7 sec.. not bad!

What would we be looking at 0-60 on a R33?

Leon cupra thing ?

Cupra R or 330d have been the best suggestions so far. You can pick up 330d's for under 10k and they are a great car with handling and torque. Personally I like the Leon as I think they are a great looking car and they can be modded/chipped up to some silly horsepower for a FWD!!
