Does anyone understand how this Subway offer makes money?

I popped into a Subway this evening and ordered a foot long sub. With filling and extras it came to £4.99....

...however, the guy at the till said that if I took a drink it would cost me only £3.99!

How does that work then? I could have understood it if I was offered a free drink but to get a drink AND get a quid knocked off the bill is barmy.

I took the deal, natch, but I'm way confused. Can anyone explain this?

The cold drinks cost absolute peanuts from the dispensers... seriously ask people in the catering trade. As far as the actual subs, they are just lower their 300% profit margin to 200% probably :)

It wasn't a drink from the dispenser. It was a bottle of drink. Oasis Citrus Punch FWIW.

in real terms considering your situation it doesnt make business sense, however if the vendor is doing an advertised deal and someone orders something which falls within the advertised deal then the vendor, in line with fairness should offer what the advertised deal is made up of irrespective of the consumers ignorance of the offer.

It's because you've just posted this on a big forum, and no doubt have mentioned it to other people, and other people who've seen it will mention it to other people.

I know for a fact that I now want a sub, even though I haven't been there for about 3 years, many others will too, and the alure of a good deal is too much for some people.

They aren't 'losing' money, because how much does it cost to build a sub anyway? They buy all the fillings in bulk, the company makes the bread, I wouldn't be suprised if a sub outlay was about 20-30p, + bulk buy drinks at 15-20p? They're still making money, and with the probably doubling or trebling of custom due to this offer they'll be laughing!!!
