Power Steering Squeakiness

Rob

Recommended Posts

I,ve been getting the old fan belt squeak/squeal for a few weeks now, and put it down to the general damp weather. The squeal mainly comes when turning the steering wheel, but yesterday it would also occur when I turned the AC on, all of which makes me think the belt is worn.

BUT...yesterday whilst peforming a three point turn, the power steering felt very stiff, not so stiff that it had completely failed though, and at full lock, the battery light, cat temp light and the oil level light came on.

Power steering fluid level was ok.

Is the pump on the way out?

Still sounds like the belt.

Remember that one belt drives the A\C Compressor, water pump, P\S pump and alternator. As your problems seem to be related to all of these then my guess would be the belt.  Have a look at it and the tensioner.

Many thanks.

I reckon I can change the belt myself, but having had a good look under the bonnet, I can't work out where the tensioner is or indeed if a component like the alternator acts as a tensioning device.

Any advice before I trawl thorugh the MKIV.com microfiche thingy.

The tensioner for the drive belt is located at the front of the block (obviously) sort of inbetween the two cam pulleys and slightly below them.

Bit hard to describe.
