CJ
What do you do for entertainment? Now, this may come as a shock but we have TV, DVD's, bars, cinema, clubs, restaurants etc. Just because my location looks "rural" does not mean I am in the outback. I know, just trying to find a reason not to be jealous:) The only thing I can think of is the odd track day, so please don't tell me you've got a local track too:d

In fact, my battered old Celica still attracts a few admiring glances when I drive around - so you can see the standard of most cars here! Hence my comment in another thread about travelling at 100mph. The island is only about 40km long and 10km wide. There is only 1 "main" road and that doesn't really lend itself to quick driving. When I am out and about, the fastest I tend to go is about 50mph. Makes a change from my Supra owning days, I can tell you.

Even though it would not be practical, just driving it every now and again would have been great.

CJ
Do you mind me asking what you do for a living out there in paradise CJ ? I work in a bar during the summer months. I wait tables, provide entertainment and generally run things. We work a split shift system out here of 6 months on - 6 months off.

AndrewOW
I am not envious in the least. Well that's a bit of a lie Kos is such a pretty little island. Have you cycled to the centre with the wild peacocks yet? Nice place for a picnic, and they like grapes, by the way

AndrewOW
I haven't been there. Whereabouts on the island is that? Umm the centre? All I remember, and when I say that it was well over 10 years ago when I went there, was a small 'nature reserve' on the 'main' inland road between Kos Town and Kardamena. It consists of a small river and some shady tree cover with picnic tables and barbecues that you can use for free. The peacocks just wander about and are really quite friendly. It was fascinating watching them swallow things whole and you could see it go all the way down its neck. Well we liked it anyway! We were staying just outside the village of Kardamena. Lovely place, but a bit noisy at night
MrRalphMan
I so envy you....erm....NOT! At least I never got laughed at... Cannot see the pics at work, looking forward to seeing them later. I assume that you've got something put away and that the waiting on tables for 6 months doe not cover the 6 months off..
CJ
...I assume that you've got something put away and that the waiting on tables for 6 months doe not cover the 6 months off.. Well, I don't have as much as I would have liked due to a house sale falling through. But you do not need a lot to be able to live comfortably out here and even on the lowly wages of a waiter, you can still save enough to just about get by through the winter. To give you an idea, I earn about 1000 euro per month when working. I also get a share of tips which is about another 150 euro PCM. I get my lunch and evening meal paid for and I get my drinks for free. I also had an end of season bonus of about 400 euro. During the season, my expenses are quite small as my rent is only 250 euro PCM and water / electricity is cheap. I guess I save about 650 pcm during this time so that ends up in a pot of about 4500 euro at the end of the season. If I don't go crazy, I can easily live on 700 pcm out of season so yes, you can live out here on the summer wages. I also pay IKE (like our NI contributions) and that entitles me to unemployment benefit after I have worked 2 full seasons.
